Like most viruses this particular strain (H5N1) has been slowly mutating as it spreads across the Asian and European continents. It now has spread from birds (in most cases poultry) to some other birds and it can spread to humans. As of March of 2006, 104 people have died of the avian flu since it appeared in 2003. It is estimated that with the normal bird migration this strain or a new strain will reach the U.S. by the Fall of 2006.
