Over the years a number of air filtration companies have developed and sold a wide variety of portable air filtration devices. All of these are fan powered units that run off standard 120 volt household current. Some of them use a combination of a media filter for particulate removal with a carbon media or carbon impregnated media for some odor control. Most have multiple speed fan controls to allow for air flow adjustment. Some are quiet while some produce a fair amount of air noise once you turn them past the low volume setting. And, some use HEPA filters. But very, very few are powerful and quiet, use commercial grade HEPA medias and true bulk carbon media and are quiet.
Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. They use commercial grade carbon media in all of their units and commercial grade prefilters ahead of the HEPA and Carbon media filters to keep these filters clean and extend the life of the HEPA and Carbon. Air filtration systems made by Pure Air Systems are sold throughout North America as well as world wide. These units are recognized as some of the most powerful, well built, high performance HEPA systems o on the market today.
In 2006 Pure Air Systems began the process of designing and building a small, portable HEPA unit that would incorporate all of the qualities and systems design of the larger HEPA Shield systems in a truly portable unit. The challenge was to build a small unit that could utilize a 99.99% certified, commercial grade HEPA filter and include a prefilter and carbon media filter as well. The real issue was coming up with a blower/motor combination that was small and powerful and could handle the static pressure issues of pulling air through a HEPA and two other filters and not create much noise. Finding that blower/motor system was the key.
After more than six months of trying different blower/motor combinations a system was found that met all the requirements. EBM blowers out of Germany had been making combination blower/motor assemblies for years and had many of their products in use in the US. The EBM combination blower/motor used for the PAS portable HEPA system had four different speed settings, was quiet and powerful enough to pull the air through three filters and produce over 400 CFM. For a unit that was 21″ long and 13″ square, this made the PAS portable unit one of the smallest, most powerful, true HEPA filter systems on the market.
Today the HPS 350 and HPS 500 portable HEPA systems by Pure Air Systems are writing the new standards for portable HEPA units. For more information on these and the other HEPA based air filtration systems available from PAS please go to our website at: www.pureairsystems.com

My name is Don Musilli. I started Pure Air Systems in 1985 and then sold it in 2006. I continue to consult for PAS and write their blog and control their Twitter account. I also, on occasion, make changes to the website. The company is now almost 26 years old and has been a major player in offering commercial grade, high performance HEPA and Carbon based filtration systems for the commercial, institutional, industrial and residential markets.
I currently reside in Englewood, Florida where I write blogs and do social media marketing for a number of clients.
