When one sees the word by-pass they often think of heart by-pass surgery or using the business by-pass around a city center.

Pure Air Systems pioneered the use of commercial grade, fan powered, HEPA filtration systems by-pass configurations in the  late 1980’s. Up until that time incorporating a true HEPA filtration system in a residential environment.

Most homes in the U.S. use a ducted heating/cooling systems where the air handler ( air moving device) is located in a basement, garage or closet. Putting anything other than a general duty low efficiency air filter in the return air side of the air handler is not recommended. The high pressure drop or resistance across more efficient filters and especially HEPA filters will significantly reduce the air flow through the air handler and could even have the cooling coils freeze up and/or increase your heating/cooling bills by up to 50%.

PAS came up the the concept of placing their 600HS or larger units in a configuration where some of the air coming back through the main return would be directed into the Hepa Shield system and the balance back to the air handler. Since the HEPA unit has its own blower/motor system this fan pulls the air through the HEPA eliminating any additional resistance that the main air handler blower/motor has to handle. In essence it is a 0 sum addition.

Even though only about 40 to 60 % of the air is going through the HEPA filter system at any one time, over the course of 24 hours all the air in the house has been completed filtered 25 to 50 times. And, if you have a home that is slightly negative then you can introduce a very small amount of outside air into the HEPA unit. A small amount, 50 to 100 CFM , is not going to affect the heating/cooling capabilities at all.

So, with one Pure Air Filtration system, you can create an extremely clean, environment that will significantly reduce airborne allergens, dust and because the systems also incorporated carbon filters, you will reduce house hold odors.
