The process of removing airborne contaminants that are small enough to potentially cause respiratory dysfunctions is somewhat challenging. For the most part particulate removal with standard air furnace type filters is effective on larger, visible particles many of which are aspirated in and then expelled out of the lung systems.

Sub-micron sized particles, those that are less than 1 micron in size, are easily aspirated into the lungs and much of this particulate will stay logged in the lung linings or mucus membranes. This is why particulate removal with HEPA filters is so necessary especially in where airborne allergens and harmful bacteria and viruses are present.

Originally designed during the development of the Atomic Bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico, HEPA filters have progressed to include filter medias that are more effective than the 99.97% at 0.3 microns. Today there are SULPA filters that have an efficiency of 99.99995% at 0.12 microns. These are the types of filters used in Class 10 clean rooms where micro-chips are manufactured.

Pure Air Systems began using HEPA filters for particulate removal in 1985 in their first system, the Model 600H. This fan powered HEPA based air filtration system could move up to 600 CFM of HEPA filtered air. Today, PAS makes 6 other HEPA based models including a portable HEPA unit capable of moving from 10 CFM to 250 CFM using the newer ECM motors. The largest system, Model 2000HS Plus moves up to 2,000 CFM of HEPA filtered air.

Over 70 years ago the HEPA filter was born to protect the technicians from beta particles produced during the design of the bomb. Today, particulate removal with HEPA filters is considered the best method for protecting us from harmful airborne contaminants.

About the Author: Don Musilli

My name is Don Musilli. I started Pure Air Systems in 1985 and then sold it in 2006. I continue to consult for PAS and write their blog and control their Twitter account. I also, on occasion, make changes to the website. The company is now almost 26 years old and has been a major player in offering commercial grade, high performance HEPA and Carbon based filtration systems for the commercial, institutional, industrial and residential markets.

I currently reside in Englewood, Florida where I write blogs and do social media marketing for a number of clients.
