The use of portable HEPA filter systems in homes has been a common process for many people with airborne allergies. However, most of the portable HEPA units use a very minimally effective filter media which is more like a high end furnace filter than a true HEPA filter.

True HEPA filters are very dense and have a high resistance thus needing a fairly powerful blower/motor assembly to pull the air through them. 90%  of all the portable HEPA filters or Air Purifiers on the market use small fans with very small blowers and usually cost between $35.00 to $90.00. In reality, a portable HEPA unit with a True HEPA filter should cost around $300.00 to $500.00. These units use more power but also move more air and are much more effective at removing small, sub-micron particles than the less expensive units.

It is also important to make sure the unit says it is using a True HEPA filter. HEPA filters cost between $90.00 and $150.00 each, so any air purifier under $200.00 is probably no using HEPA filter media. If your situation requires the removal of fine airborne allergens, then you really need to purchase the high end HEPA systems.
