Beginning in 2006, many of the major manufacturers in the U.S. decided that labor costs were too high here and that competing with overseas companies required a different strategy. The companies shipped both their R&D and Manufacturing operations overseas. Mostly to China and Indonesia. Some had offices in those area but those were absorbed by the other countries. This also included the tech industries who required employees with specialized skill sets and allowed did design the products here but had them made in China.

With the advent of Amazon on the scene, the American public began purchasing items based on cost not on where it was made. Today China makes over 65 % of the products we use in the US and some are now made in Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Ireland and Mexico. In addition, the vast majority of high end electronics now also come from Japan and South Korea. You can’t purchase a TV made in the U.S.

Manufacturing is a very difficult and expensive process and building new plants requires a few years of investment with little profit. So, while many people believe that the new tariffs will change that equation, they are not dealing in reality. Also, any new manufacturing  visa-vie Tesla, will be done using the robots now being produced in the U.S and overseas. People are too expensive and we no longer have the skilled technical labor to create this companies. Even Apple has admitted that the labor costs in China are no longer cheaper but the highly technical manufacturing processes they now have in place are far superior to what we have in the U.S.
