HEPA filters have been around for a long time and they are used in a wide variety of applications including hospital surgery suites, commercial air filtration applications, cars, homes and in AI chip manufacturing. These filters are unique, in that they are made from special fibrous paper and extremely good at removing particles in the air is sizes down to .01 microns with efficiencies approaching 99.99999%. 

There are various grades of HEPA filters. The standard HEPA filters are effective down to 0.3 microns at 99.99% and are capable of removing all bacteria and some larger viruses. There are ULPA HEPA filters ( Ultra Low Particulate Air ) and SULPA  HEPA filters( Super Ultra Low Particulate Air ). These HEPA filters are normally used in Clean Rooms where the elimination of 99.99995% of all particles .01 microns and larger are required. To give you an idea of how small this is, your hair is about 100 microns in diameter. Also, you can only see down to about 20 microns with the naked eye. So .01 microns is very small. 

Over the past 30 years, HEPA filters have been incorporated into many air filtration devices and systems. Pure Air Systems, Inc. developed a fan powered, HEPA based air filtration system in 1985 that used the standard HEPA as its base filter. The company has seven different systems with air flows in the range of 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. These are all metal housings using programmable variable speed motors that can compensate for the increase of static pressure across the HEPA filter and automatically maintain the required air flow for the applications.
