Smoke, no matter how it is generated, is made up from very tiny particles that usually have a sticky or tacky component to them. This tacky substance will stick to any surface and then release the smoke odor for a period of time. This is why you have that smoke odor on your cloths after being encased in smoke from a grill, wood fire or cigarette. Smoke is perhaps the most difficult of airborne contaminants to remove due to these issues. The tacky material clogs up the openings of most particle filters and unless you are using an open mesh filter media which has virtually no capacity to collect much if any of the smoke particulate.
In order to remove a very large percentage of the smoke particles and help reduce the odor that continues to release from the smoke coatings, you need to utrase a multi-stage filtration unit. This would include a prefilter ( medium duty air filter ) carbon adsorption material and a HEPA filter. These three stages are used in commercial applications where smoke removal is required. This type of system design is not often used in the residential market but it is available for homeowners from Pure Air Systems, inc.
PAS has been making commercial grade, HEPA based, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985. These units come in a metal framed housing and use variable speed controlled motors that can be operated remotely with an app. The systems come in a wide variety of sizes and air flow capabilities from 50 CFM up to 2,000 CFM. They can be attached to an existing HVAC system or use as stand-alone units.
