Making micro chips is a very challenging and expensive process. The cost of building these chip plants is enormous and there are only a handful of companies that are currently making these chips. The manufacturing process includes clean room assembly areas where the chips are fabricated and to keep the environment very clean they use very high end clean rooms.

The chips are made in layers and if any airborne particulate gets in between these layers it will short out the chip. And these chips are not cheap to make so if they have any issues with contamination in the manufacturing area it is possible to lose the entire run of chips. To ensure this does not happen these Clean Rooms use HEPA filtered air in a positive pressure mode to keep the rooms extremely clean. 

Clean Rooms have a specific classification each Class having a performance demand issue. A Class 100,000 means that the room has a maximum of 100,000 particles per cubic foot in the room at 0.3 microns. As a comparison the amount of sub micron airborne particles in your home range from 200,000 to 1,000,000 particles per cubic foot. In chip manufacturing Class 100, Class 10 and Class 1 clean rooms are utilized. This means a class 100 can only have 100 particles per cubic foot in the room. These are rooms with a minimum number of personnel that are usually completely gowned head to foot. In Class 10 and Class 1 clean rooms there are no people just robots.
