I am not a huge fan of the band Metallica, but I do happen to like their song, Enter Sandman. It is different than most of their Very heavy metal music and actually tells a story and your  can understand the lyrics. There are other bands whom I don’t follow very much but they, like Metallica, have one or two great songs that get lots of air time on the radio and are on my iPod.

Like my selective choice for music, when I am purchasing certain items I usually go to a certain brick and motor store or shop online where I will purchase that item. The stores may hundreds of other items but I only purchase those select, one or two, items every time.

Many companies that are in the manufacturing business may offer a number of items both standard and custom for customers. However, they often have 80% of their  business derived from 20% of their product line and while they often consider paring down their product line they find customers like the ability to option shop.

Pure Air Systems opened their doors in 1985. I am sitting here writing this blog looking at a 1000 piece puzzle that was recently finished by 3 family members. It is a picture of over one hundred old and new gum wrappers from the early 40’s to today. Being one of the older baby boomers in the group I do recognize some of the names like Beemans, Dentyne, Old Black Joe and PAL Bubble Gum.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. We look at something from the past ( and it can be the recent past) and it brings back a flood of memories. And, we often remember those times as  being less complicated and more fun than the present. The truth is we tend to remember the good things and not the more difficult times.

The beginning of Pure Air Systems was filled with many unknowns and lots of challenges. Bringing a new product and  relatively unknown technology to the market was very difficult in 1985 as there were few marketing avenues available then unlike today with social media and the internet.  Face-to-face marketing and meetings with potential end users, HVAC contractors and HVAC distribution companies was the norm and the trials of  getting something fabricated and then getting all the correct component parts in on time to actually complete the product and ship it on time was a nightmare.

Today, with PAS celebrating its 31st Birthday, its is hard to remember those  good old  days of business start-up. It is more important to know where we are going than where we have been. Like the old gum wrappers on the puzzle picture, it is nice to remember the good times.

While the issue with terrorist actions around the world has been with us for a long time, the recent attack in Paris reminds us of how much we are all alike. We deal with these challenges on a regular basis and all of us are affected whether it happens in your home town or across the pond. We also tend to become desensitized to the issues as they happen on a regular basis and the amount of media attention tends to get lost in the other problems of the day.

Moving on and maintaining a regular schedule and staying within our comfort zones are the ways we deal with these types of inhumanity. Like many issues, if they don’t affect us directly and personally then we tend to deflect the information to a different level of concern. It is, in many ways, the way we stay sane.

The continued advancement of technology in almost every discipline confirms the prognoses that technology is indeed doubling every two years.  This speed of iterations in design and development means that the term “thinking outside the box” is no longer valid and should be replaced with “there is no box.”

This new waive of thinking is actually more prevalent in the small, entrepreneurial business scene than with some of the larger, multi-national companies simple due to the size or these organizations. Small, 2 to 10 man companies can make decisions faster and in many cases are willing to go outside their normal resources to locate individuals who can assist them in enhancing or creating new product ideas and concepts to quickly take advantage of new technology break through that will help them compete in this ever-changing market place.

Pure Air Systems, started in 1985, with the concept that most individuals who suffered from allergies due to airborne allergens and particulate would benefit greatly using their commercial grade HEPA based, fan powered air filtration systems.  Previously, HEPA filter systems were only used in the electronics industry, medical applications, and governmental R & D. The average homeowner used fiberglass filters or electronic air cleaners, neither of which was very effective at removing much of the small, sub-micron particles and airborne allergens or pathogens that would create problems for allergy sufferers.  The introduction of HEPA filtration systems to the general public gave them  access to filtration technology here-to-for available only to a select set of companies and organizations.

In the mid 1990’s General Electric started to develop a series of motors that did not use copper winding material but rather magnets to drive the impeller shaft. These were called Electric Comutating Motors or ECM motors and they could operate on either 120 or 240 volt, 50Hz or 60 Hz. This meant they could be used anywhere in the world and more importantly they could operate at any speed…from 1% to 100% of power in 1% increments. Digital controls were then made available to control the motors  from any location. Even infrared remote capabilities were developed for the motors.

In 1998 Pure Air Systems began to experiment with these motors using them in their larger HEPA air filtration systems and in 1999 started the conversion process by using the new ECM motors in their 600HS series units and eventually putting them into their entire line of systems. From 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 HP applications, all of the PAS systems incorporated these new, more powerful, fully adaptable motors. Pure Air Systems was the first air filtration manufacturer to use the ECM motors and the sales of systems climbed considerably shortly thereafter.
