Phone Books Are Going The Way Of The Dodo Bird!

Many libraries, businesses, schools, medical facilities and even homes no longer rely on the ubiquitous phone book ( white or yellow pages) to get phone numbers and addresses for individuals or businesses. The old yellow pages  line that said ” let your fingers do the walking” has been changed to “let your fingers do the typing.” The use of the computer or digital device has replaced, for the most part, the phone book. Soon, like the Dodo bird, the telephone book, as we know it, will become extinct.

While there is still a portion of the population that either refuses to become computer literate or just can’t figure out how to make anything more complicated than a standard phone work, the vast majority of people use digital devices to not only find individuals and businesses but also to save or “archive” this information for future reference. All with the touch of  a few keys or buttons on your iPhone.

Not only can you find information faster, but you can access rating information on that specific product or service in an instant from a number of respected sources. You can’t do that with a phone book. This is why most companies today put more money, time and serious effort in developing a website and e-mail addresses to provide for a connection to their business from anyone anywhere around the world in less than 2 seconds. You can’t do that with a phone book. Oh yeah….and you can contact the business from your computer and ask them to give you a price or answer more questions about their product or service….without having to call them.

As I mentioned earlier, companies that use their websites as their primary method of marketing their products or services put a lot of time and money into developing a site that is informative, educational, detail specific, includes typical applications and even allows you to purchase their products on line.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing and marketing its line of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. It was one of the first air filter companies to build a website in the early 90’s when .com was not even a term. Over the years PAS has modified, changed, altered and improved its web site to include a lot of useful information including typical applications, specific references showing how other companies utilize the systems and Pure Air University, a section dedicated to inform you on how filtration and carbon adsorption actually works.

You can even order replacement filters and some of the smaller systems online. And of course, there is a section that allows you to send questions directly to the PAS staff so that your specific problem or application can be addressed. How To Turn Three Negatives Into A Positive!

You always hear about the eternal optimist that says you can always turn a negative into a positive if you just rethink the problem. All too often we have something happen in our lives that creates a negative feeling or puts us in a negative mood. But these negative thoughts are a waste of energy. Instead of dwelling on what could go wrong or did go wrong, look at all the positive things in you life and don’t waste energy worrying about the negative aspects of the issue.

The title of this blog relates to turning two negatives into a positive and while your life  maybe filled with multiple negative thoughts the two negatives I am referring to relate to negative pressure of the physics kind.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based, fan powered, commercial grade air filtration systems since 1985. The use of certified, commercial grade HEPA filters creates a design issue in how you incorporate the motor/blower assembly and HEPA filter to obtain maximum performance with minimal noise and air turbulence.

HEPA filters, by their nature, have a relatively high resistance to air flow due to the extremely dense HEPA paper that is used in the fabrication of the filter. When moving air through a fan/motor assembly with a HEPA filter in line you have two options. You can put the fan in front of the HEPA and blow air through the HEPA filter keeping the fan/motor assembly in the dirty air stream or place the HEPA in front of the fan/motor assembly.

Since the resistance to moving air across the HEPA is so high ( over 1.0 inches as measured in water column) pushing the air through the HEPA filter creates an air buffeting affect and requires more horsepower to push the air through the filter. By placing the fan/motor assembly on the clean air side or “negative” side of the HEPA you get a very smooth flow of air, little or no buffeting and a reduction in horsepower requirements.

The HEPA systems manufactured by Pure Air Systems also incorporate a carbon media filter and a polyester, dual layer ring panel roughing filter. All of these filters are placed ahead of the fan/motor assembly. So they are all on the negative side of the blower and offer the same benefit of having a smooth, non-buffeting air flow across their surface areas and keep the blower and motor clean. So in essence, you are turning three negatives into a positive.

Many other companies that utilize HEPA filters in their systems place their blower/motor assembly ahead of the HEPA and this creates more noise fills up the HEPA filter faster as it tends to push the dirt into the HEPA paper rather than pull the dirt through, which is a more efficient way of using the HEPA filter.

How Much Wood Can A Wood Chuck..Chuck?

Over the past year Geico, the auto insurance company, has been using some comedy in their commercials. The latest involves the old line of “how much wood can a wood chuck, chuck…showing wood chucks throwing (chucking) wood into a  river. An old man comes by and says ” hey, wood chucks stop chucking wood into my river!” I found this amusing but I’m sure others found it ridiculous.

The point is that the commercial gets your attention and whether you like the product or the commercial you remember it. And that is the whole point of making this type of commercial. It differentiates it from other bland commercials and ads.

The ability to differentiate or separate your product or company from the competition is a age old challenge for all businesses today. Trying to tell someone your product or service is really better than the other similar or “like” business is very difficult. Often the best way to really separate yourself from the competition is to do what you do better than anyone else and be consistent. Continue to add value to your service or product line and any changes you make need to fill a known void in demand. Sound simple, its not.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based high end, commercial grade, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985.  Since the beginning PAS has always challenged itself to produce the highest quality, best performing, most reliable air filtration products on the market.  Over the years as more individuals, companies and institutions started to use our product line we continued to listen to their comments and suggestions as to how we could make the product better. We listened and made the appropriate changes.

Today, Pure  Air Systems’ products are recognized as some of the most reliable, best performing and technically superior air filtration systems on the market today. And with almost 20% of our systems being sold overseas, we have increased our product exposure world wide.

You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tune A Fish!

Did you ever have a conversation with a sales person trying to sell you something but using some stupid logic to qualify why you should buy it? Or watch a commercial advertising a product or service that you couldn’t see anyone buying or using? Or perhaps you watched a news broadcast telling you one of the government agencies just changed its mind 180 degrees on a health care issue that originally was considered significant? Somethings just don’t make any sense.

There is no doubt that with todays digital technology you can create a story that seems plausible and is supported by some facts but is, in truth, a well developed fabrication. This is a process that is being used to sell everything including selling you on what your local, state or federal politician is doing….or not doing…or going to do.

In the area of indoor air filtration systems or air purifiers as they are normally called, there is a lot mis-direction being used to sell you on the effectiveness and efficiency of these systems.  Often times the company will use visual displays and tools to show the effectiveness of a filter to remove large amounts of airborne dirt, dust and allergens. The fact is that even the most ineffective filtration device does well on large particles you can see with the naked eye.

Particles that range in size from20 microns and up are visual with the naked eye but only constitute about 5% of all the particles in the air. The particles that are in the non-visible range or sub micron range constitute the other 95% of the airborne particles. And these larger particles are more easily aspirated in and out of your lungs. It is the finer, less than 10 mcirons in size particles that  will stay logged in the lung linings and mucus membranes.

The difficulty in showing this capture capability of these smaller particles is that it can’t be easily done without using some sophisticated and expensive equipment. Yet, for people that have severe allergies or respiratory issues the purchase of a filtration device that is not at least HEPA quality or equivalent is a waste of money.

It is interesting to note, that the filter devices and air purifiers you see on the infomercials are normally the least effective systems while few HEPA systems are ever advertised. Again, the HEPA filters work on the large and sub micron particles which are not visible. The ones “as seen on TV’  that use the visual component as their main selling tool are most often sold through the infomercial approach.

25 Years Of Environmental Service

Started in 1985, Pure Air Systems has been providing commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems to the residential, commercial, institutional, governmental and industrial markets for 25 years. Over those years PAS has always subscribed to building the best, most effective high performance HEPA systems for their customers. And some of the customers and applications have been interesting to say the least.

While the HEPA and Carbon systems are used in hundreds of applications there are a few that are somewhat unique. For example, there is a police station in a major city in the southern US that happens to have a lot of marijuana confiscated due to the high percentage of dealers in the area. The pot is placed in the evidence room which is locked and secured. Evidently over time the odor from the marijuana permeates through the evidence room and the employees were having some challenges with concentration ( if you know what I mean).

Pure Air Systems was contacted and asked if we could assist them in this odor problem. We suggested one or our larger, 2000 CFM all carbon units to help in removing a high percentage of the pot odor. The system was installed and the odor issue was resolved. To this day they continue to order replacement carbon for the system. Obviously business is still good!

One of our residential customers was a big game hunter and would have a number of his kills stuffed and mounted. These were the complete animal not just the head. These trophies would be placed in a wall area behind glass for viewing. The enclosure was not completely sealed so dust and dirt would get into the trophy case and get on everything. Keeping the enclosure clean was difficult and tedious, so he contacted us and asked if we could provide him with a HEPA filtration unit and system design to keep his trophy cases somewhat clean room clean.

PAS used two of the small 600 CFM HEPA units and designed a ducting system to attach them to back of the trophy cases and circulate HEPA filtered air through the cases 24 hours a day. This resolved his dust on the Bear problem and he was a happy camper!

The HEPA systems from PAS are designed to be used either attached to HVAC systems or as stand alone units capable of being used in almost any application. One of our customers wanted to use our HEPA systems in a mobile hospital unit. This unit was used over seas and designed to go into the back country to provide medical attention to people who lived in isolated areas. One of the larger HEPA systems was installed and the mobile hospital had a mobile surgery room. The PAS systems use a 120/240 volt 50/60 Hz ECM motor which can work with any of the electrical power systems anywhere in the world.

On our website is a listing of a number of companies and installation types that you can view. For more information on our complete line of  HEPA, Carbon and filter medias please go to www.pureairsystems.com

Hydrostatic Water Pressure

One of the reasons that fluids, like oil and water, are used as mechanisms to move large, heavy objects is that they are not compressible. That is, when placed in an enclosed vessel or tube or hose and pressure is added (usually via a pumping device) these fluids will push or move objects with tremendous force. This is why all large construction equipment is operated hydraulically.

Many of us who have a basement in our homes have experienced or know someone who has experienced water coming into their basement area either through concrete walls or sump pump area. This usually happens after a heavy rain or down pour when a lot of water is dumped from the skies in a relatively short period of time or if it rains for days at a time and saturates the ground.

As the water filters down into the ground the weight of the water increases and forces its way into the path of least resistance which can be a sump area in the house or through the more porous openings of a concrete basement wall. The longer it rains the more water, the more water the more weight and the higher the hydrostatic pressure.

While many of the newer homes have drain tiles located around the parameter of the basement, many of the older homes do not. And even with drainage tiles many new homes with basements now have sump pump(s) to keep water from coming into the basement area. Water can even come in through small cracks or openings in the basement floor.

In many cases water problems in homes can be man made. If you have a lawn sprinkling system and many of the sprinkler heads are located close to the house, you can have water soaking the area close to the foundation and create the same problem. Or, if you don’t have any downspouts on your gutter systems or the downspouts don’t drain water far enough away from the home foundation, the same problems can occur.

Water can be one of the most destructive challenges to a home. Not only can it destroy carpeting and damage equipment on the basement floor, but the higher moisture levels and wet materials provide a perfect breeding ground for mold. Once you have experienced water in the basement it is essential that all affected areas are completely dried and all standing water removed.

In basements that are unfinished, normally the heating/cooling ductwork is not completed. Typically there is only one supply vent and no return vents constructed in the duct system. The system is only completed when the basement is finished as part of the initial construction. This is important to know for two reasons.

First, with no return air grills in the basement none of the airborne dust or mold particles or humidity will be drawn back to the HVAC system. This means none of the air will be filtered (assuming there is a filter or filtration system on the HVAC unit).

Second, none of the humidity will be removed from the cooling coils or dried through the heating system. This means you will have a higher moisture content in the basement than in the first and second stories of the home. Keeping water, water vapor and humidity out of the basement is essential to eliminate the possibility of mold growth.

Pure Air Systems manufactures a line of HEPA based air filtration systems that can be used either as stand alone units or attached to existing HVAC systems. The smaller, portable units can be used to filter the air in an area such as a basement and the larger units are designed as whole-house units. Finding The Best Air Filtration System

Years ago the most often used resource to get information on a product or process was to go to your best friend, associate or family member. They would recommend a product or contact or store and you would consider their comments as gospel. You didn’t feel the need to go anywhere else for information since this process has always served you well. Or did it?

Getting information from one source on a product or service that is important to you is no longer the best path to success. The internet now offers you the opportunity to obtain information on any product, process or service from thousands of resources; some reliable some not.

You now have the ability to gather information from a wide range of resources including; published articles from journals, universities, government, business and end users. You also can access clubs or groups that specialize in working with or using a specific type of product or service with excellent feedback on the validity of the products performance.

So when it comes to finding the best type of air filtration systems, air purifier or furnace filter for your residential or commercial application, this same information gathering process is available.

Most companies that offer air filtration systems have websites that offer both technical information as well as the ability to purchase their equipment on the site. When viewing these sites it is important that you look at the information on the product, how it works, the overall efficiency of the systems and the length of time the company has been in business.

As with any competitive business, the filter industry has its share of products that are more gimmick than performance. This is especially true of the filtration industry where some technologies such as ozone generators or electronic air cleaners are rated as efficient as HEPA filters.

Your first step is to determine your specific filtration needs; be it a single room filter device, home, office, laboratory etc. Then the overall effectiveness required. Are you looking to just remove some of the larger airborne particles? Are you an allergy sufferer? Do you also have an odor problem? Is this a clean room type application?

Once you have determined your needs, you want to find the types of filter companies that sell those specific systems or filters and start gathering information. Secondly, you want to go to the informational sites where there are published articles that discuss that specific type of filter mechanism or media.

Third, and this is very important, you want to find some third party references that have used or are using that specific type of filter device or media.  Once you gather all this information you can now be more objective in your filter selection process.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985 and has systems installed around the world. Their website has a lot of technical information on their systems as well as the competition for your review.
