Variable Speed Drive Motors Power Pure Air Systems HEPA Units

Pure Air Systems was founded in 1985 and at that time the electric motors used in their HEPA based air filtration systems were typical wound motors. These motors were only capable of running either at one speed, or 3 speeds if adjusted to the speed controller. They were also either 120 volt, 60 Hz or 240 volt, 50Hz.

In 1998, PAS along with General Electric, started to play with the new ECM, variable speed drive motors that were magnet driven and not the typical induction motors used in the past. These new motors could run forwards, backwards and could controlled to run at 1% of power up to 100% of power in 1 percent increments. And, they were rated from 1/3rd HP up to 1 HP using the same base unit but by changing the drive add-on could be changed from 1/3rd HP or 1/2 HP to 3/4 or 1 HP simply by changing the controller section.

In addition, by using digital controllers, the customers had the ability to change the speed of the motors and the level of filtration from any location in the room or proximate to the filter systems. These units could also be programmed to operate on a pressure differential basis so as to speed up the fan motor when the HEPA filters started to load up and create more static load. This allowed for continuous speeds throughout the life cycle of the HEPA filter.

The newer versions of these motors now allow for complete programing functions either from the factory or by the end user with some minor education by the factory. These newer motors, like the original variable speed drive motors, are now 120/240 50/60Hz so they can easily be adapted to working anywhere in the world. These new motors are used on the complete line of HEPA based air filtration systems offered by PAS. Models, 600HS, 1200HS, 2000HS, and the HPS Portable HEPA filter systems.

Pure Air Systems. Making A Name For Itself

Innovation is a word that is often over used in today’s market place. Some new ideas or concepts are just an alteration to an already existing product that is being labeled “innovation.”

In I985, Pure Air Systems was formed and it introduced some new concepts in fan powered, HEPA air filtration systems for both the residential and commercial markets. With an All-American made system, Pure Air Systems ventured into the air filtration market with a commercial grade, high performance, true HEPA filtration system that could be used in a wide number of applications, both residential and commercial. Initially, the PAS line of filtration units was limited to one model, and it incorporated the standard GE Induction motors and no bells and whistles.

By the 1990’s PAS had developed 5 additional models varying from the new HPS Portable line to the very large 2000 CFM 2000HS Plus unit. These new units were now using the new variable speed drive, ECM type motors that were rated, 120/240 Volt, 50/60Hz. This provided systems that could be used anywhere in the world. In addition, the new motors could be used with digital variable speed controllers offering customers the ability to adjust air flow and power performance to meet any performance specifications.

Today, Pure Air Systems is one of only 3 companies in the world that produce this type of commercial grade, high performance HEPA based air filtration system.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor Air Quality has been an issue for enclosed spaces, homes, office buildings, medical facilities and industrial buildings since the early 70’s. The issues of people suffering from a wide range of health issues, mostly respiratory in nature, became more acute once the building industry started to build tighter buildings that offered little or no outside air intrusion. This process reduced the energy costs, but increased the amount of stale air and concentrations of gaseous pollutants and airborne particulate that are generated from most materials, chemicals, plants, animals and manufacturing processes.

Using only recirculating air through the air handlers and HVAC units and not allowing any outside, fresh air increased the IAQ issues. Adding outside air only added to the amount of particulate already present in the occupied space.

Pure Air Systems, based in Indiana, had developed a variety of commercial grade, fan powered, HEPA filter systems that could be used to both filter the air in the space as well as add small amounts of filtered outside air. By only adding 50 CMF to 100 CFM of outside air through the PAS units, one air handler could introduce up to 6,000 CFM of fresh, filtered outside air every hour and adding that to the recirculated air also being filtered, created a much healthier environment and reduced the amount of headaches, and respiratory issues in most residential and commercial operations.

Adding the small amounts of outside air, even on hot and very cold days, had a minimal affect on the amount of energy required to heat and cool the indoor environment. By adding an actuator to the inlet damper, it is possible to modulate the amount of outside air so that more or less air could be introduced depending upon weather or the conditions in the occupied space.

HEPA Systems For New Intel Chip Manufacturing Facilities

Intel is investing $20 Billion dollars to build two state-of-the-art Micro Chip manufacturing plants in Albany, Ohio. Chip manufacturing is done in Class 10 and Class 100 clean room facilities which are constantly being cleaned by HEPA filters with the rooms being under positive air pressure.

Chips are comprised of multiple layers and then assembled together. These layers are highly sensitive to any airborne particulate, even in the sub-micron level, as the dust particle will destroy the chips function and short it out when in use. The types of HEPA filters used in the manufacturing and assembly areas are normally comprised of a series of HEPA’s in banks. They use HEPA, ULPA and SULPA HEPA filters that will remove 99.9999% of all particles 0.12 microns and smaller. As as comparison, the Human hair is about 100 microns in diameter.

Pure Air Systems has been providing commercial grade, fan powered, scanned HEPA filters ( 99.99% at 0.3 microns) since 1985. Many of these systems have been and are being used in smaller micro chip operations, medical facilities, hospitals, military and institutional plants. The PAS systems range from 50 CFM up to 2000 CFM and can include Carbon media along with a Prefilter.

House of The Rising Sun

There are some songs that seem to transcend time and this one by Eric Burton and the Animals is not exception. For almost anyone alive today hearing the first 5 cords of this song instantly remind you of what comes next. There are products and companies that also fall into this category.

Pure Air Systems, Inc. Founded in 1985, is one of those companies. PAS was one of the first companies in North America to offer true HEPA based, fan powered, air filtration systems for both residential and commercial applications. The model 600HS was the first HEPA system that was designed to attach to any forced air, ducted HVAC system using the partial by-pass concept. This allowed the use of the 600, 1200 and 2000HS series units to used in any application for any size HVAC unit with the added ability to introduced fresh, filtered outside air in small quantities to help pressurize any environment.

Today, Pure Air Systems is one of only 3 companies in the world that produce this type of commercial grade HEPA air filtration system. These units also use the variable speed drive motors and can be programmed to adjust the speed ( air flow in CFM ) to suit the application.

Time To Consider Whole House Air Filtration

For most home owners, having an air filter in the main return air duct next to the HVAC fan system or separate filters in the numerous return air outlets in the rooms of the house, constitute whole house air filtration. 99% of these filters are general duty filters that are capable of removing very large airborne particles and not adding any static pressure load to the HVAC fans. The compromise here is that you are trading air flow for not so good air filtration.

In 1985, Pure Air Systems introduced a new HEPA based, fan powered air filtration system that would provide a much higher level of removing much smaller airborne particulate including bateria and some viruses. By using a concept called, partial by-pass system, PAS can attach their HEPA units to the return air side of the HVAC ducting system and because the PAS systems have their own fan, they will not impede the performance of the main HVAC blower/motor assembly.  In addition, the PAS units also incorporate a prefilter and carbon media filter for removal of odors and gaseous pollutants.

Since the inception of the partial by-pass concept, PAS has sold thousands of these units to home owners across North America and has even placed some on board ships and in the hospitality industry. This concept is easy to install and can be retrofitted on existing, ducted HVAC systems in any application.

Using Metal Instead of Plastic Composites

Many products that used to be fabricated from metal are now made by using an injection molding process and a wide variety of plastics to keep the cost and weight down. In many cases this option works as the strength of many of the composite plastics are very strong and will work for most applications.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems began its process of making fan powered, commercial grade, HEPA air filtration systems for both the residential and commercial markets. The cabinets used to house the filter components was mild steel that was powder coated. These rugged housings allowed for the use in both interior and exterior applications and provided a housing structure that would last 20 years or longer under heavy use.

The housings ranged in size from the small portable which is approximately 13 inches square by 21 inches long, the 600HS series which is 16 inches square by 34 inches long ( high ), The 1200 HS series which is 25 inches square by 48 inches long and the 2000HS series which is identical to the 1200HS in size. All of these units are fabricated from 16 gauge powder coated steel and are built to last.

Early in the 90’s. Pure Air Systems looked at the possibility of using strong, composite plastic materials in-lieu of metal housings but found both the cost and challenge of making a unit strong enough to hold the metal blowers, ECM motors and HEPA filter and associated prefilter material. In this case, metal was and has always been the best choice for making the high performance HEPA based air filtration systems.

Blockchain Filtration

Blockchain technology is in the news everyday and unless you have been hiding under a rock all you hear anymore is Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin and Blockchain. The advantages of using the blockchain process for storing data is the ability to have a secure set of data that cannot be changed or altered making it a very unique method of storing all types of encrypted data including Bitcoin.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. Their fan powered commercial grade systems utilize a three-stage filter system. The first stage, is a dual-layer polyester ring panel filter. This captures much of the larger particles and protects the carbon filter and HEPA filter that follow. The carbon media unit that follows the prefilter, captures airborne gaseous pollutants. Lastly, the 99.99% scanned commercial grade HEPA filter that follows the Carbon filter captures over 99.99% of all particles 0.3 microns in size and lager.

As with the Blockchain technology, the three-stage filtration process used by Pure Air Systems in all of their systems capture all the particulate and retain it in their air filter components forever. HEPA filters are the primary filtration technology used by the CDC, hospitals, clinics, surgery suites, and the reduction/removal of airborne viruses such as the Covid-19 strain.

Filtration For Your 3D Printer

With over 13 years of experience in using FDM and FFF 3D style printers one learns quickly the various quirks in the operation of these printers. While they have improved dramatically since the 2011-2012 introduction of desk top printers, there are still some challenges when printing with various filament types. To be specific, ABS ( Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene ) has been one of the more popular materials with which to print. However, this material off-gasses when printing at 245 Degrees C and above and the odor can be quite significant. In addition, the gases produced along with some of the fine particles released during printing can become a health concern if not properly vented or isolated when printing occurs.

One of the other issues when printing with ABS is the layer separation that can take place if the object being printed cools to rapidly during the printing process. To minimize this issue you need to enclose the printer and keep the cold air drafts from falling on the printer bed. This enclosure can also also double as a mechanism to reduce the entry of the odors and particulate into the room. The use of a fan powered exhaust system attached to a vent in the enclosure along with a carbon media and HEPA filter will allow for continued use of the printer inside any room or enclosed area without compromising the environmental integrity of the room.

Pure Air Systems has been making fan powered HEPA and Carbon medial filters since 1985. These systems are designed to move from 50 CFM up to 2000 CFM with the ability to control the air volume in 1% increments. These metal framed units come in seven different configurations with the addition of a portable unit that is a prefect fit for the enclosures that would be placed over the 3D printers.
