HEPA For Terrorism

We are constantly reminded that we live in a era where anyone at anytime can create mayhem with simple, exotic or well crafted killing tools. There are no limits as to what device a motivated anarchist can do with any of these style devices. Yet, for all the external damage that can be done with hard technology, the invisible, airborne pathogen still creates the greatest threat.

Tiny viruses and bacteria are invisible to the naked eye but can be a major threat to our bodies if these pathogens are inhaled, absorbed or injected into our systems. The only true method of totally removing these objects is to use a mechanical filter such as HEPA. High Efficiency Particulate Air filters have been around since 1940 but their real push into the market came in the late 70’s and early 80’s with the development of the micro-chip.

As HEPA technology improved the types of HEPA paper and testing methods became more effective especially as organizations like the CDC began to work with some really horrible contagions and had to isolate them in special rooms with multiple levels of HEPA filters including the newer ULPA (Ultra Low Particulate Air ) and the new SULPA (Super Ultra Low Particulate Air) filters.

In 1985, Pure Air Systems came onto the market offering true, commercial grade, fan-powered HEPA air filtration systems. This was the first true entry of commercial grade HEPA units into the residential market place. Over the years a total of 7 HEPA systems were produced by PAS and the incorporation of the new ECM motors allowed them to create models that had variable speed motors and that could be sold anywhere in the world.

These systems are considered some of the best HEPA filtration systems in the world and have been used in applications where the facility is being prepared to protect against biological attacks. There is no better filter for removal of harmful airborne pathogens than HEPA.

Stand-Alone Air Filtration Systems

Air filtration systems for both residential and commercial applications come in a variety of types and performance packages. Depending upon the type of particulate or gaseous pollutant that needs to be removed, the filter media used in the air filtration systems can be general duty filters or high efficiency filters such as HEPA media.

Stand-Alone units mean just that. They are units that incorporate a blower/motor system that is capable of pulling air from an area and pushing air out to the environment or other area. These systems can range in volumes of air moved ( as measured in CFM, or cubic feet per minute ) from a low of 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM and higher.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA based, fan powered, commercial grade, stand-alone units since 1985. These systems use the newer ECM Variable Speed motors that can be automatically or manually adjusted to produce various ranges of air movement (CFM). This feature makes the units more viable for a multitude of applications using one system.

Pure Air Systems offers 7 different variations of their Hepa Shield Plus units including a small, powerful portable unit for laboratory type applications. Each unit has a dual-layer prefilter, carbon media and true HEPA filter. These are all commercial grade filters and are designed for even the most difficult of pollution control applications.

PAS stand-alone systems can be mounted on a wheeled cart or platform and moved from location to location. The S versions have threaded nuts in the top section so they can be mounted from a ceiling using threaded rod. The units come in 1/3, 3/4 and 1 HP versions and all the motors are rated, 120/240 volt , 50/60 Hz so they can be used anywhere in the world.

Pollen Season Is Coming – Time For HEPA Filters

Now that February is here, Spring is just around the corner and with the warmer temperatures and rain comes the new production of grass, tree and ragweed pollen. Allergies to airborne pollen and other airborne allergens is actually more challenging in many ways than fighting off a cold or the flu which can last from a few days to a week.

A person suffering from airborne pollen will have to endure the process for many weeks and even months in some cases. And, the allergy medicine primarily helps relieve some of the symptoms but at a very minimal rate. The only true way to remove yourself from the airborne pollen is to…well remove yourself from the airborne pollen.

Pure Air Systems has been making and selling HEPA based, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985 and is now one of the leaders in high performance HEPA air filtration systems.

PAS has a method of attaching any of their HEPA systems to an existing, ducted HVAC system or the systems can be used as stand-alone units. This means you can have commercial grade, certified HEPA filters continuously filtering the air in your home, office or work place and in addition the systems can be used to slightly pressurize the area to totally eliminate the potential for any infiltration of outdoor particulate.

Thousands of these systems have been sold over the past 32 years and for those individuals who have used the 600HS, 1200HS or 2000HS PAS systems their issues with allergies due to pollen and other airborne particulate have been reduced to the point where they have little or few symptoms.

Allergies Are Airborne

Most people who suffer from allergies caused by grass, ragweed, tree pollen or animal dander connect with this allergen through ingestion through their nose or mouth. All of these allergens are airborne and whether you are inside a home, building, school or other indoor environment avoiding the outdoors will not protect you from breathing in these tiny, airborne particles.

Often you will see pollen residue on a table outside or even on windows in your car. However, much of the airborne particulate are smaller than 20 microns which makes them invisible to see with the naked eye. These  tiny particles are carried into the home or building on your clothes as you transport them from one location to another. Then when you walk or move you shake off the allergen particles and they become airborne again which brings them into the air for you to inhale…..again.

Home air filters or furnace filters are not capable of removing these small, sub-micron sized particles. Only HEPA filters will actually remove these tiny airborne particles and the best solution for your home is to install a whole-house HEPA system from Pure Air Systems.

PAS has been making whole-house HEPA filtration systems since 1985 and is the leader in producing a wide range of fan powered, commercial grade, HEPA air filtration systems that use variable speed drive blower/motor units which allow for use as part of your HVAC system or as stand-alone units where you can control the fan speed in 1% increments up to  100% of fan speed.

These systems come with a scanned 99.99% commercial grade HEPA systems, a ring panel prefilter and a true Carbon filter. The PAS housings are all metal as is the blower. Typical life span of these systems is 15 to 20 years.

Air Filtration For Dummies

The device that you or your HVAC contractor changes once or twice a year is designed, primarily, to keep the cooling coils clean. It has very little effect on the removal of airborne particles that maybe harmful to your health.

These general duty air filters are comprised of very open mesh or pleats that allow air to pass through easily but capture larger dust and dirt particles to minimize any deposit of dirt on the cooling coils which could, over time, significantly reduce the efficiency of the coils and also put dirt on the blower wheel.

Dust particles you can see are about 20 microns in size or lager. As a comparison, your hair is about 100 microns in diameter. However, airborne particles that may harm you body when inhaled are usually smaller than 1 or 2 microns in size. The efficiency of the general duty air filter on these sized particles is about 25% at best. Meaning your health is not protected in any way from indoor airborne contaminants with these general duty filters.

Perhaps the best way to get some real basic information on how filtration actually works is to go to the Pure Air Systems website. ..https://www.pureairsystems.com  There you will find a section entitled “Pure Air University.” This is broken down into simple sections detailing how filtration actually works and the reasons why you may want to look beyond the general duty filters if you really want to clean up your environment.

PAS produces high end HEPA based, fan powered, air filtration systems and has since 1985.  32 years of experience in working with all types of airborne contaminant applications allows them to share their experience and knowledge of this process with anyone who cares to go to their website.

Capturing Odors and Particulate From 3D Printers

3D Printers have been on the market now since 2010 and the use of the FDM or FFF style 3D printers that use filaments made from a wide variety of materials are the most commonly used in schools, libraries, small R&D labs, business and homes.

Some of the materials that are used in the printing process such as ABS and Carbon Fiber produce significant odors and in a small room this can be very noticeable and unpleasant. In addition, small, sub-micron particles are released into the air during the printing phase. These particulate are too small to see with the naked eye but can become an irritant to those individuals who have allergies or have some form of respiratory dysfunction.

In order to remedy this issue, should it present itself as a problem, one option is to enclose the 3D Printer to contain the odors and particulate and the second is to connect a filtration system to the enclosure to effectively remove the odors and remove the airborne particulate.

LiteWorld LLC makes a large plexiglass enclosure with aluminum frame and large access doors that will fit over the larger open 3D printers such as the LulzBot TAZ 3D Printers. These enclosures can be purchased directly from LiteWorld by going to their website at: http://www.liteworldllc.com or contacting them by phone at: 941-999-8200.

Pure Air Systems makes the HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems that can connect to one or multiple enclosures to both remove the odors using the Carbon filters that are included in the systems and remove the particulate by using the commercial grade HEPA filters. These high end systems, coupled with the LiteWorld enclosures will provide an almost clean room environment for your 3D Printer operation.

Creating Negative Pressure With HEPA Filtration Systems

Pure Air Systems started making HEPA based air filtration systems in 1985. Today they are one of the leaders in HEPA filter technology with over 7 different fan powered systems ranging in capacity from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM.

In the 60’s and 70’s Asbestos removal was a very big industry as older homes and builders were gutted to remove the harmful asbestos materials. In order to keep the asbestos fibers from flying around and getting out into the open areas or outside the contaminated space, the areas being cleaned up were enclosed in 3 millimeter thick Polyethylene sheeting. Large, fan powered HEPA systems were placed outside the containment area pulling air from inside the containment area creating a negative pressure inside the cleaning zone.

The HEPA filters would trap any of the Asbestos particles and when you entered the containment area through a zipped door air would move into the zone rather than come out of the zoned area.

In the medical field when patients are considered to have a highly communicable disease, they are often placed in rooms that are kept under negative pressure again using fan powered HEPA filter systems. This ensures that any viruses in the room stay in the room.

These same techniques are used by the CDC or WHO when they are working with deadly viruses and bacteria. The rooms where they experiment with these pathogens are tightly sealed and under negative pressure with the air passing through multiple layers of HEPA filters using HEPA, ULPA and SULPA filters. The rooms are designed so that the doors will not open unless the air handlers and HEPA systems are in operation.

HEPA filters are made from very dense media and they have a lot of resistance so larger motor /blower units are required to move air through the HEPA filters. HEPA filters are the only filters capable of removing particles as small as 0.12 microns at levels approaching 99.99995%.

Pure Air Systems HEPA Air Filter Systems

HEPA filters have been around since the development of the Atomic bomb in New Mexico in the 1940’s. Originally designed to remove radioactive alpha particles to protect the engineers at Los Alamos, HEPA media or paper is extremely dense and has the ability to trap sub-micron sized particles at levels approaching 99.9995%. In the case of the technicians in New Mexico, these filters were life savers.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was formed to provide true HEPA based air filtration to the residential market. The initial unit, model 600H, had a 12″ x 12″ 10″ high metal framed HEPA filter the fan was powered by a  1/3 HP induction motor. The unit would produce up to 600 CFM of HEPA filtered air.

The initial marketing for the product was challenging as HEPA was not a common filter media used in the residential market in those early years. The market grew as more people demanded by whole-house filtration and wanted to get away from the standard furnace filters that really did nothing to remove the levels of harmful sub-micron particulate in the air.

Fast forward to 2016. PAS now offers 7 different HEPA based air filtration systems ranging from the new HPS portable units up to the 2000HS unit that can move up to 2,000 CFM. In addition, PAS now uses the newer ECM variable speed motors that allow for use in any country around the world. These are 120/240 v 50/60Hz magnet driven motors that also adjust for the increased pressure drop across the HEPA filters as they load up with particulate. These motors are also more efficient and offer variable speed control to their owners.

Today, Pure Air Systems has filtration systems in every area of the market including, the commercial, institutional, medical, food, beverage, industrial, electronic and residential. All of the units come standard with one prefilter, one HEPA unit and one carbon filter. They can be reconfigured to have only carbon media or or two carbon filters and one HEPA filter.

Pure Air University

When evaluating a product for which you may have little knowledge it is always good to get some objective information from a reliable source. The company from which you want to purchase the product will have a lot of sales data and list the benefits and features but little about the technology used in the design and operation of the product.

The philosophy of many companies is to list features that people will recognize and not confuse them with the technical specifications. This allows for more reading space to sell the product and show the applications.

Selling air filtration systems can be challenging especially when you now have a standard that is used when rating the efficiency of the filters. The MERV ratings are used to provide the consumer with some idea of the overall effectiveness of the filters based on a percentage of removal of certain size particulate. The ratings start at 1 and go 20 with the higher numbers meaning better efficiency at removing smaller airborne particulate.

Most furnace filters are in the MERV 4 to MERV 7  ratings. These are general duty filters and they are good at taking out large particles with minimal air flow resistance. To remove a very high percent of those particles that are sub-micron in size and the most harmful you need a MERV 20 filter.

Pure Air Systems has an in-depth archive in their “Pure Air University” section that goes into depth on the technology behind air filtration, both mechanical and electronic. With this information you can better determine the type and size of air filter or filtration system required for your application or specific health issue.

HEPA Filters are rated MERV 20 and as shown in a MERV chart  and are the best mechanical filter for use in applications where sub-micron particulate needs to be removed. These units are used in medical, institutional, industrial, commercial and laboratory applications.

The Shallows

I recently rented the movie ” The Shallows” staring Blake Lively playing a stranded surfer on an island in Mexico where she tangles with a very large shark.  The Shark won’t let her get back to shore after she inadvertently got on a small whale that the Shark had killed thinking she was taking his food.

Surprisingly the movie was good although I believe the Shark would not have been so aggressive in real life. It is always fun when movies take an idea and give it enough truth to be able to sell the unbelievable parts.

Companies often do the same thing when marketing their products. They spin the benefits and features as being the most effective and best performing of any product of its type on the market and show you a video proving their claims. Only the video, like the Shark movie, is slightly to the left of the truth. We all want to believe that what someone is telling us is both accurate and the truth. It is getting harder today to distinguish the truth from fiction.

Performance tends to be the best way to judge the merit of a concept, idea, product or even a movie. With the use of social media as the primary method of exchanging information these days, people are very quick to send out a  review of a certain product, restaurant, movie, play or people in politics. The upside is that a quality product that works well as promised will get a significant amount of positive comments by the masses. Conversely, if the product fails to live up to its performance guarantees, then a huge number of people with eviscerate the company or the product through the internet. And all the TV and newspaper ads won’t stop the bleeding.

Pure Air Systems started its company in 1985 on the premise that it would produce the highest quality, best performing products for the air filtration market. The HEPA and Carbon based, commercial grade, fan powered air filtration systems by Pure Air Systems are considered one of the best in the world today. This did not happen by accident.

Meeting the ever-changing needs of the market place is difficult. PAS has managed to do this by continuing to develop products asked for by the commercial market and consumers alike. They sell performance and reliability on a daily basis.
