HEPA Filtration Systems For Covid-19 Applications

As with most Covid type Viruses, Covid-19 will be with us for a while and like the normal Flu, Covid-19 will also change and have variants over time. For this reason, it will be important to look at putting some HEPA based air filtration systems in your operation to minimize the airborne spread of the virus in small offices or close quarters for your employees and other personnel. This could be one way to somewhat reduce the issues regarding wearing masks, proximity to other people and even operate with un-vaccinated personnel.

Pure Air Systems has been making fan powered, commercial grade, HEPA filtration systems since 1985. They offer a range of sizes for any application or room size. These systems can be used in conjunction with and existing HVAC system or they can be used in a stand-alone configuration. All of the systems use variable speed drive motors and the air volume can be adjusted from 1% to 100% in 1% increments.

Pure Air Systems can provide you with all the information you will need to select the right system for your application to offer the best performance for the reduction/removal of airborne contaminants. High Performance HEPA Portable By Pure Air Systems

Pure Air Systems has been making commercial grade, fan powered HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. They are one of three companies in the world that provide this type of filtration systems. PAS makes a number of models of HEPA systems that range from 600 CFM to 2000 CFM all using variable speed drive motors. Their portable system, the HPS series was introduced around 1992 and has since gone through a number of refinements. It was the only HEPA unit in the line-up that did not use a variable speed drive motor. In stead, it used a 4 speed motor from EBM.

Coming this year, PAS will be fitting the popular portable HPS unit wiith it’s own variable speed drive motor. This will allow for a CFM range from 25 CFM up to 250 CFM in 1% increments. In addition, the new motor will be designed to maintain the same speed/cfm rating even as the pressure drop increses across the HEPA filter. And likes the original version, the new HPS unit will have a prefilter, carbon filter and a true 99.99% scanned HEPA fitler as standard equipment.

The portable HEPA unit has a wide range of applications and is very well suited fror the laboratory environment as well as small confined areas requiring HEPA filtraiton in both a positive or negative room application. The all metal housing and rugged construction make this one of the best portable HEPA systems on the global market.

Pure Air Systems Is Major Supplier Of Filtration Systems To Fight Covid-19

Created in 1985, Pure Air Systems was one of the first US companies to offer commercial grade, fan powered, HEPA air filtration systems for the general publc. These systems are designed to be used as both stand-alone units as well as attaching them to existing HVAC systems to provide central and whole house filtration. Over the next 10 years Pure Air Systems developed seven different sizes and configurations varying in air volume capacity from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. In addition the systems had the capacity to add carbon media and prefiltration in conjunction with the HEPA filters providing systems that could handle almost any air filtration or odor challenge in the market.

When Covid-19 entered the globe in eary 2020, many of the hospitals, clinics, laboratories and municipal facilities across Norht America started lookng for HEPA based air filtration systems as HEPA filters are the only type of air filter that can remove a subtantial amounty of airborne viruses. Standard air filters are, for the most part, not very effective in removing these sub-micron particulate from the air.

The Pure Air Systems units use very powerful, variable speed drive motors ranging from 1/3 HP to 1 HP, they can move a lot of air through the HEPA filters which are extremely dense. In additon, the units can move air through ductwork that is connected to the filtration systems so they can be used to provide clean air in a large space. The systems can also be used to create either a positive or negative room area for patient isolation as is the common practice in most Hospitals.

Today, Pure Air Systems is one of only three companies around the world that produces a metal framed, commercial grade, fan powered true HEPA air filtration that can be used in a very wide range of applications in the residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and medical markets.

Mechanical VS Electronic Air Filtration Systems

Most people are familiar with the air filters that go into your HVAC system that look like folded or pleated paper media. These are normally refered to as mechanical filters because they use the mechanics of air velocity to impinge the airborne particulater onto the surface of the filter. Electronic air filters use positive – negative charging as their method of collecting these same particles. These electronic air cleaners use plates for wire grids to trap the particles but unlike mechanical filters, are less efficient than mechanical air filters as they allow for much of the particulate to pass by the collection grids without capture. For this reason mechancial air filters are the preferred method of dust collection.

Air filters perform two major functions in HVAC systems. One is to keep the dust from accumulating on the cooling coils in your air handler to ensure proper performance of you air conditioning system. The second is the removal of airborne particulate in the air to keep the indoor environment cleaner. These mechanical air filters come in different efficiencies from general duty up the high efficiency HEPA air filters.

The use of very high efficiency mechanical filters including HEPA sysems is now extremely important due to the need to remove airborne bacteria and viruses during this pandemic. Schools, office buildings, and all medical faciities are using mechanical air filters with higher efficiency ratings to contain the airbone contaminents as much as possible.

Do UV Lights Really Kill Covid 19 ?

Ultra Violet lights (germicidal lamps) or UV systems come in both a hot (8,000 hours life) and cold plasma (rate 36,000 hours life) lamp systems. They produce a specific wavelength of 253 nanometers and produce UV C. This wavelength has the ability to affect microbiological contaminants like mold and bacteria. The UV C light can destroy the DNA of the microbiological and keep it from replicating. UV C has no effect on solid particles and it does NOT remove anything from the air stream. UV C lights are normally placed in the return air stream, although the speed of the air past the lights can minimize the effectiveness of the UV lights. We suggest that placing a UV light at or near the cooling coils works better as the light can irradiate this moist area all the time and help in minimizing the growth of mold or bacteria. UV lights are an ancillary piece of equipment and should always be used in conjunction with an air filter or air filtration system.

The Use of UV lights to reduce or kill Covid 19 viruses is somewhat limited to the distance to and the duration of time it sees the virus. That is why UV lights are more effective placed in the return air duct of the HVAC system and the fan has to be running all the time. Further more, you need really good filtration in front of the UV lights otherwise they will become coated with dirt and dust and thus significantly reduce their effectiveness.

If you look at the miriad of photos and TV footage of Hospital wards treating Covid 19 patients, you never see any UV lights in and around the patient beds. Sterilaztion with chemicals and the use of PPE are much more effective in that area of the hospital. The real danger in using UV lights is the thought that this technology is a primary method of eliminating the Covid virus when in truth it is  only a terciary device at best.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA based air filtration systems for over 35 years and today the use of HEPA filters has become the primary method of maintaining surgery room cleanliness in Hosptials, Clinics and laboratories all working with Covid. 19.

Using HEPA Fan Powered Systems For Virus Protection

Keeping employees and customers safe in buildings, stores and other enclosed spaces will be a major part of returning to the new normal. Aside from making desks and work spaces at least 6 feet apart the ability to maintain some form of control over the ventilation systems would be the next major hurdle. The standard HAVC system in residential and commercial building is designed to move the air through return air and supply air ductwork and keep the room cool or warm. The types of filters normally used in these systems are what we call “general duty” air filters. Meaning they will remove large particles, dust and some smoke, but are not really capable of removing anything close to the size of viruese which are down to .005 microns in size. Basically a billionth of an inch.

Pure Air Systems has been making fan powered, commercial grade, HEPA air filtration systems since 1985 and has seven different configurations and air volume sizes to meet most needs in the commercial, institutional and industrial markets. Since its inception, PAS has provided a unique adaptation of their systems so they can be used in a partial by-pass configuration. This allows the HEPA systems to be connected to the main return air duct in a partial-connection taking a portion of the return air and putting in through a 3-stage filter system including a prefilter, carbon media pack and a scanned 99.99% HEPA filter. Using this concept allows for partical cleaning of the air continuously without affecting the performance of the main air handler. In most cases all the air in the room would be filtered once every 30 minutes to an hour. In addition, it is possible to add small amounts of outside air into and through the PAS unit prior to entering the main air handler which helps to pressurize the room area and also dilute the inside air. The small amount of air that is added from the outside does not really affect the temperature since the percentage is usually around 3% to 5 % of the total volume of air being cooled and or heated.

The systems offered by Pure Air Systems range in CFM volume from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. These systems all use variable speed motors and are digitially controlled. They are made from components all made in the USA and assembled in Indianapolis, IN.

Pure Air Systems To Be Highlighted In Pharmacy Practice Magazine

Pure Air Systems has been making commercial grade, fan powered HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985 and has seven different model and size configurations to fit any commercial, medical, industrial or residential application for reduction and/or removal of sub-micron airborne particulate. Recently, GOTO RX, a company based in Ontario, Canada that specializes in pharmacy clean rooms and other products for the pharmacy industry, recently purchased a 2000HS HEPA filtration system from Pure Air Systems to tests it’s effectiveness using a smoke test by the College of Pharmacists, Air Quality test protocol. The unit was mounted in the ceiling of two clean rooms with short duct runs to a number of inlet points to capture the smoke that was generated by the testing equipment.

William Fretwell, President of GOTO RX provided this description of the smoke test and the results. The 2000HS was tested at a flow rate of 43% of maximum ( 2000HS can move up to 2,000 CFM ) with a room  air change rate of 45 air changes per hour which is above the 30 changes per hour normally required for this type of clean room. So there was lots of spare capacity. During the smoke test where a special chemical is used to generate smoke that is extremely fine with much of it invisible to the naked eye, the particle counter found no smoke passing through the Pure Air Systems HEPA unit. The 2000HS created a clean room environment in both rooms with a Clean Room rating of Class 6, which is 10 times cleaner than the required standards. William Fretwell commented that, ” most hospitals don’t have anything up to this standard”.

As a result of the successful test results, GOTO RX is planning on publishing an article for Pharmacy Practice Magazine with the title, “The New Clean”. It is important to note that PAS has been using their HEPA based filtration systems for over 35 years in a wide variety of clean room type applications with superior results. Pressurizing Your Home With PAS HEPA Filtration Systems

The majority of most homeowners are not aware that if their HVAC system is not properly balanced, when the heating/cooling fan system comes on the house may be pulling in outside air into their environment. This is referred to as the house being negative. Since your home is not really air tight, anytime the HVAC fan comes on the system will pull air through the returns and push the cooled or heated air our the supply ducts and registers and if there is more return than supply outside air will come in and make up that difference.

This is a significant challenge as the air being pulled in from the outside will contain fine airborne particulate and some gaseous pollutants especially if you are near a road or high traffic area. This airborne dust is usually not captured in any of the air filters that are part of your HVAC system so this particulate matter will usually settle out on your floors, furniture and counter tops.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was created and it was one of the first companies to offer true fan powered, certified HEPA air filtration systems for the residential market. The first model, 600HS was designed to attach to the return air side of the ducted heating/cooling system and filter a portion of the air in the house constantly when the fan was running. In most cases it can filter all the air in the house 24 to 48 times per day.

One of the other advantages of this system was the inclusion of both a ring panel prefilter and true carbon media filter so removal of fine sub-micron particulate and gaseous pollutants was also accomplished. In addition, it is possible to introduce a small amount of outside air into the 600HS, or whichever PAS unit you are using, and this will fill filter any of the air coming into the house and help to maintain a more balance house pressure while still cleaning all the air in the house. And because this small amount of outside air is being introduced prior to the HVAC unit. all of it will be both filtered and heated or cooled.

Air Filtration For 3D Printing

The use of 3D Printers has grown 1000 % over the past few years. Many schools, businesses, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and individuals now own a 3D Printer. The majority of the printers used in the schools and homes are the smaller FFF or FDM filament style printers that print with various types of plastic or composites. These printers can print over 30 different materials and their tool head nozzles can reach temperatures at or above 300 degrees celsius ( 580 F ). When melting these materials during the printing operation, small amounts of sub-micron particulate are produced which depending upon the materials used for printing may create some health issues when inhaled by the user. Air filtration for 3D printing is now becoming a major concern.

Pure Air Systems, an Indiana based company, has been making HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. Their fan powered units range in volume from 50 CFM to 2000 CFM and their systems all use commercial grade HEPA’s, variable speed drive motors, industrial fans and all metal housings. In the past year a number of the PAS Portable units ( 250 CFM ) and the 600HS ( 600 CFM ) units have been used to filter the air from one or more filament style printers to remove the less than 20 micron sized particles from the air. HEPA filters used in the PAS units are certified at 99.99% at 0.3 microns. Much of the particulate generated by the printers is in the 1 to 10 micron range which can be inhaled and trapped in the lungs. Over time this could create some significant lung problems and severe side affects. More studies are being done all the time to determine the cause and affect.

In many cases the Pure Air Systems units are attached to special enclosures that are used to cover the printers and confine the particulate to one area. One of the better 3D Printer Enclosures is made by LiteWorld LLC., http://www.liteworldllc.com . The PAS units are very powerful allowing one of them to be used to filter the air for multiple printers.

Air Filtration For Coastal Areas

If you live on or near the coast line of the U.S. you know the pleasure of looking out over the water and hearing the crashing of the waves and that smell that only comes from being near a body of water. For most people it is very cathartic.

However, with the changing climate conditions and the continued lack of concern over dumping a wide variety of trash into our oceans and lakes, the development of various Algae and toxins is now being found off many coasts.

These toxins are airborne and are harmful to coastal birds, fish and humans. These airborne bacteria range in size from 3 to 10 microns and are not visible with the naked eye. This makes it more difficult to deal with as most people are concerned with what they can see.

In 1985, Pure Air Systems was founded and developed a high end HEPA based air filtration systems that could be attached to any force air ducted heating/cooling system with the ability to clean the entire home 24 to 48 times per day.

PAS uses scanned HEPA filters. These filters are certified to capture 99.99% of all particles 0.3 and larger and up to 99.95% of all particles 0.12 microns in size over time. This means they will remove any and all of the harmful airborne bacteria that comes on shore from the oceans and lakes .

For people with respiratory issues or asthma, these airborne particulate can exacerbate their ability to breath normally without some type of respirator or having to remain indoors when these toxic bacteria are released into the air.

PAS makes a line of fan powered HEPA filtration systems that include a small portable HEPA unit that can move up to 350 CFM of air to our largest system which can move up to 2,000 CFM of air. Except for the portable, the models 600HS, 1200HS and 2000HS can either be attached to an HVAC system or used as stand-alone units. .
