Created in 1985 by Don Musilli, Pure Air Systems was one of many companies offering air filtration systems for the commercial and residential markets. But the separation from the competition began shortly thereafter. From the beginning, PAS used an all metal housings, Lau Blowers, GE Motors and commercial grade prefiters, carbon media and HEPA filters. The initial units sold for $695.00. Over time, PAS added other units to their line up and in 1998 became one of the first powered fan filter companies to use the new GE ECM variable speed drive motors. 

The addition of the new motors and expansion to a 9,000 sq. ft. building allowed PAS to expand their product line to 7 different size air filtration systems all of them now using the upgraded, digitally controlled variable speed drive motors. The ability for the motors to be 120/240 50/60 Hz created a new market overseas for the larger systems. The new HPS portable unit opened the doors to more medical markets and the Covid – 19 global pandemic created a whole new market for commercial grade HEPA air filtration systems.

Today, there are only two other companies in the world that make a fan powered, commercial grade HEPA air filtration unit handling up to 2,000 CFM and as low as 50 CFM. With material costs for metal and other components increasing rapidly, it is much more difficult for companies to offer products such as the ones from Pure Air Systems.

HEPA filters were developed in the early 1940’s during the creationg of the atomic bomb.The use of radioactive materials in the making of the bomb created extreme health hazards for the technicians and engineers that had to handle this type of material. Due the extremely small size of the radioactive particles ( Sub-micron in size ), readily available air filter media like furnace filters, were totally useless in reducing the levels of radioactive particulate. They needed a filter material that could absolutely remove and capture these tiny particles. 

After trying a number of materials a process using a wet laid paper type material infused with tiny pieces of glass was used to develop a very dense material that was capable of filtering out these tiny sub-micron particles. The paper like material was formed into an accordian style form with pieces of aluminum sandwiched beteween each folded layer to protect the paper-like media as it was relatively fragile and could abrade by rubbing on itself.

The filter pack was placed inside a square medtal housing and was glued in place. The outside parameter of the metal housing had a neoprene type gasket so when it was placed in a sheet metal duct it would compress the gasket to form a leak-tight seal. These filters had an initial efficiency of capturing 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger and as it got dirtier its efficiency increased. The use of this HEPA filter allowed the technicians to work in a safer environment culminating in the eventual creation of the two bombs used on Japan to end WWII.

Wearing a mask during the current pandemic has been accepted by and also rejected by large portions of the US population.Some of reasons are political, some are irrational and some are based on science. The latter being the more logical rationale.

It seems that the, “What you don’t see won’t hurt you”, mindset has taken over our ability to feel threatened by the virus. Yet, this virus like all airborne viruses has no concience or cares little about your ability to see it. You can only see particle sizes down to about 20 microns with the naked eye and this virus is about 0.005 microns in size which makes it only visible using an electron microscope. When someone who has Covid-19 talks, coughs, sings or laughs they are expelling millions of sub-micron particles into the air, some as droplets some as fine, invisible mist. The closer you are to that individual and the longer you stay in close proximity to that individual the larger the concentration of the virus you will breathe in. Unless of course you are wearing a mask.

The use of any covering over your mouth and nose is by far much safer than wearing nothing at all. Maks will prevent you from getting high concentrations and also minimize the amount of the virus you may transmit if you are infected. It is, in essence, the human thing to do.Covid -19 will continue to be with us for a long time just like the other Covid viruses for which many of us get inoculated each Fall to reduce our chances of getting the Flu. And, like the Flu this virus is always changing and the longer it stays around the more virulent it becomes and the less exposure you will need to become ill.

In 1985, Don Musilli founded a company to sell high end HEPA air filtration systems to the residential market. HEPA filtration at that time was somewhat limited to the micro-chip manufacturing industry, asbestos abatement companies, medical operations and some industrial applications. The residential market was using standard pleated, card board box framed general duty filtration media filters or electronic air cleaners. Whether we are indoors or outside, we are breathing air that contains various sizes of particulate. The larger particles. those that you can see with the naked eye, are usually 20 microns in size of larger. ( for comparison, your hair is 100 microns in diameter ). These larger particles are aspirated into our lungs and the majority of them are exhaled out. The smaller, sub-micron particles however, ( those less than 20 microns in size ) tend to stay logged in the lung linings and mucus membranes. These smaller particles may represent a wide range of organic and inorganic materials including pollen, pet dander, ragweed, bacteria, viruses and industrial pollution. For those individuals that suffer from allergies many of these airborne particulate are the primary cause of their respiratory dysfunctions.

Of all the roles played by Sylvester Salon, Rambo is probably my favorite. It is a mixture of his Rocky character…slow spoken with deep honesty in his eyes, and his Expendables character where killing and maiming are often done with some weird humor. And of course, he faces numerous bad guys and barely gets scratched. Or if he does he has amazing healing powers.

In the song “White Rabbit” but Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick sings about a smoking caterpillar that approaches Alice. The caterpillar is called a hookah. I don’t believe that is the name of the caterpillar as a hookah is actually the water pipe he was smoking. But the lyrics make more sense with that sentence structure. It is interesting how we often sing song lyrics and never pay attention to the meaning or even if a word is correctly used in the lyrics.

Sometimes companies use words in their marketing propaganda or as part of their packaging that are, ,more often than not, misleading.  The words absolutely or guaranteed are used to express a sense of perceived satisfaction that the customer will experience when they use the product. But we know that is not often the case. Yet companies still use this marketing process to garner more business and hopefully new customers.

One of the main challenges with raising expectations for one’s product or service is the delivery. That is, if you promise one thing, but deliver another,  the customer will probably not purchase that product or service again. Funny how companies still believe that words have more power than performance. It is also a big mistake to mislead people as the use of social media now has so much power that one bad experience can be pushed to hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of minutes.

The years from 2006 through 2012 are now referred to as the last recession. I don’t agree. The major unraveling of our economy began when the major multi-national corporations began to move their engineering, R& D and assembly and manufacturing operations off-shore. They found the cost savings were extraordinary as they could retire many of their highly paid senior executives and engineers and the cost of labor overseas was much lower than the US based operations. In addition, the environmental laws and lower health care costs significantly added to the bottom line.

The second part of the economic collapse began when greed took over the housing market. Well greed and the lack of any controls over who could borrow money and how much credit was extended with little thought for paying it back. This was the U.S. Banking industry at its lowest point of operational functionality. Combine the unrealistic expectations that housing prices would climb 5% a month forever and the continued movement of high paying jobs off-shore and you had the beginning of the major transition that changed our economic landscape.

Pure Air Systems, a small manufacturing company in Indianapolis, makes some of the most effective, high performance HEPA based, fan powered air filtration systems on the market. There is a mythological ghost ship that is supposedly piloted by dead soldiers named the Alice Marr. Myths usually grow out of stories that are half truths supported by people who supposedly were eye witnesses to the event or occurrence but could never be verified. Facts are seldom needed as the myth has more charm and appeal than a more factual, objective and realistic account. Are there really dead soldiers piloting a ship with the name of Alice Marr? Is it possible? Does it really matter? Some people would rather believe the myth because it fits their bias toward the supernatural or unknown, while others are truly skeptics and want facts to back up the facts.

Products and their history often have the same type of perception by the average consumer. Once a product gets a reputation for being either extremely good with a consistent, solid performance or it has serious short comings, whether this is true or not the historical truths often blur its current reputation. Cadillac used to be the car everyone wanted. It had the reputation of being the best of the best in the automotive industry.  Then Lexus came into the market and in a few short years Cadillac dropped out of the picture as the elite standard in cars. Cadillac still has a following but mostly from the older generation who always associated Cadillac with quality and reliability as they were never strong supporters of the imports. In truth there are a number of vehicles that are probably superior to either of these brands but they don’t have the value myth of Cadillac or Lexus.

As humans we take a lot of things for granite. Rotation of the earth which produces gravity, land to walk on and water to swim in, and the ever present source of life, the Sun.  Being able to breathe the atmosphere in our environment is also something we take for granite. Interestingly most of us know little about the air we breathe. For example, the atmosphere we exist in is comprised primarily of oxygen and nitrogen. Oxygen comprises 21% while Nitrogen comprises 79%..( actually a little less than 79% as there are some trace elements in the atmosphere as well). In reality we are actually Nitrogen breathers although at the surface pressure of 1 atmosphere our bodies don’t absorb the Nitrogen, but they do take in the Oxygen.

When you have a cold or some form of upper respiratory infection you often find it is difficult to breathe. In actuality the lungs are probably full of mucus and the surface capacity of the lungs to take in Oxygen are significantly reduced, therefore requiring longer and deeper breaths just to get the amount of Oxygen your body requires. This same problem exists when you have lung damage due to smoking or breathing large quantities of airborne particulate in your work place over long periods of time. Ingestion of small, sub-micron sized particles create challenges for the lungs as these particulate tend to stay logged in the lung linings and mucus membranes.  People who smoke have difficulty in running or walking long distances as they get “short of breath” very quickly.

Small concentrations of harmful, respirable sub-micron sized particles, inhaled over a long periods of time can also significantly impair the lungs ability to take in Oxygen.
