Un Masking Covid -19 Size Does Matter

Wearing a mask during the current pandemic has been accepted by and also rejected by large portions of the US population. Some of reasons are political, some are irrational and some are based on science. The latter being the more logical rationale.

It seems that the, “What you don’t see won’t hurt you”, mindset has taken over our ability to feel threatened by the virus. Yet, this virus like all airborne viruses has no concience or cares little about your ability to see it. You can only see particle sizes down to about 20 microns with the naked eye and this virus is about 0.005 microns in size which makes it only visible using an electron microscope. When someone who has Covid-19 talks, coughs, sings or laughs they are expelling millions of sub-micron particles into the air, some as droplets some as fine, invisible mist. The closer you are to that individual and the longer you stay in close proximity to that individual the larger the concentration of the virus you will breathe in. Unless of course you are wearing a mask.

The use of any covering over your mouth and nose is by far much safer than wearing nothing at all. Maks will prevent you from getting high concentrations and also minimize the amount of the virus you may transmit if you are infected. It is, in essence, the human thing to do.Covid -19 will continue to be with us for a long time just like the other Covid viruses for which many of us get inoculated each Fall to reduce our chances of getting the Flu. And, like the Flu this virus is always changing and the longer it stays around the more virulent it becomes and the less exposure you will need to become ill.

Using HEPA Fan Powered Systems For Virus Protection

Keeping employees and customers safe in buildings, stores and other enclosed spaces will be a major part of returning to the new normal. Aside from making desks and work spaces at least 6 feet apart the ability to maintain some form of control over the ventilation systems would be the next major hurdle. The standard HAVC system in residential and commercial building is designed to move the air through return air and supply air ductwork and keep the room cool or warm. The types of filters normally used in these systems are what we call “general duty” air filters. Meaning they will remove large particles, dust and some smoke, but are not really capable of removing anything close to the size of viruese which are down to .005 microns in size. Basically a billionth of an inch.

Pure Air Systems has been making fan powered, commercial grade, HEPA air filtration systems since 1985 and has seven different configurations and air volume sizes to meet most needs in the commercial, institutional and industrial markets. Since its inception, PAS has provided a unique adaptation of their systems so they can be used in a partial by-pass configuration. This allows the HEPA systems to be connected to the main return air duct in a partial-connection taking a portion of the return air and putting in through a 3-stage filter system including a prefilter, carbon media pack and a scanned 99.99% HEPA filter. Using this concept allows for partical cleaning of the air continuously without affecting the performance of the main air handler. In most cases all the air in the room would be filtered once every 30 minutes to an hour. In addition, it is possible to add small amounts of outside air into and through the PAS unit prior to entering the main air handler which helps to pressurize the room area and also dilute the inside air. The small amount of air that is added from the outside does not really affect the temperature since the percentage is usually around 3% to 5 % of the total volume of air being cooled and or heated.

The systems offered by Pure Air Systems range in CFM volume from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. These systems all use variable speed motors and are digitially controlled. They are made from components all made in the USA and assembled in Indianapolis, IN.

Pure Air Systems To Be Highlighted In Pharmacy Practice Magazine

Pure Air Systems has been making commercial grade, fan powered HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985 and has seven different model and size configurations to fit any commercial, medical, industrial or residential application for reduction and/or removal of sub-micron airborne particulate. Recently, GOTO RX, a company based in Ontario, Canada that specializes in pharmacy clean rooms and other products for the pharmacy industry, recently purchased a 2000HS HEPA filtration system from Pure Air Systems to tests it’s effectiveness using a smoke test by the College of Pharmacists, Air Quality test protocol. The unit was mounted in the ceiling of two clean rooms with short duct runs to a number of inlet points to capture the smoke that was generated by the testing equipment.

William Fretwell, President of GOTO RX provided this description of the smoke test and the results. The 2000HS was tested at a flow rate of 43% of maximum ( 2000HS can move up to 2,000 CFM ) with a room  air change rate of 45 air changes per hour which is above the 30 changes per hour normally required for this type of clean room. So there was lots of spare capacity. During the smoke test where a special chemical is used to generate smoke that is extremely fine with much of it invisible to the naked eye, the particle counter found no smoke passing through the Pure Air Systems HEPA unit. The 2000HS created a clean room environment in both rooms with a Clean Room rating of Class 6, which is 10 times cleaner than the required standards. William Fretwell commented that, ” most hospitals don’t have anything up to this standard”.

As a result of the successful test results, GOTO RX is planning on publishing an article for Pharmacy Practice Magazine with the title, “The New Clean”. It is important to note that PAS has been using their HEPA based filtration systems for over 35 years in a wide variety of clean room type applications with superior results. Air Filtration For Pot Growers

The use of Marijuana for both medical purposes and recreational use is growing across the U.S. There are now only 15 states where it is fully illegal.  In 12 states you can legally smoke pot and many other states allow it for medical use. Not to be punish, but the growth of pot as a sustainable business is exploding and the states that have made it legal are reaping the rewards in the form on increase tax dollars going into their coffers.

Back in the early 1990’s Pure Air Systems, a company that makes high end HEPA  and Carbon based, fan powered air filtration systems, was asked to provide an all carbon filled 2000 CFM unit to a Florida police station to help remove the odor from the Marijuana stored in their evidence room. The odor was very strong and filled the entire police station. The system worked very well and to this day that Police station continues to order replacement carbon media for that unit.

Massachusettes, one of the states that has made pot legal, has a number of new pot growing operations now being built in that state with some at large as 1 million square feet. The goal of these operations is to produce a very high grade marijuana product so that their yield per acre is better than their competition. The better the grade the less weed you need to obtain the desired effect.

In order to accomplish this goal, these pot growers are ordering a large number of Pure Air Systems largest model ( 2000 HS ) to both filter the air coming into the building and the air exiting the building. On the inlet side, they are using the 2000 HS units with HEPA filters to significantly reduce the amount of airborne contaminants from entering the grow space that could inhibit the growth and purity of the pot strain. On the exit side, they are using the 2000 HS but without any HEPA filter. These units are usually desingated as 2000 OA units as they contain only Carbon media. These significantly reduce the odor being produced by the grow house operation. Almost identical to the application of these systems in the early 90’s at the Florida Police station.

Air Filters For Residential HVAC Systems

In today’s fast paced society we often don’t think about common products or processes. We assume that anything we buy or use will operate as indicated and that we should be able to utilize the product with a minimum of effort and retraining. Our home heating/cooling system fits into that category. We turn on the heating or cooling cycle from our thermostat and expect the temperature in the home to match the temperature setting. We do this without much thought.

When the heating or cooling doesn’t cool or heat adequately we automatically contact our local HVAC contractor rather than even attempt to diagnose the problem by ourselves. While the problem maybe a major malfunction of a component, often times the reason for the lack of cooling or heat is a plugged air filter.

The blower/motor assembly on your HVAC system is rated at a certain motor horsepower and air flow, as measured in CFM. These are matched systems for the cooling coil and heating system based upon the size of the home. This includes the static pressure the fan sees to pull and push the air throughout the duct system. If the filter is plugged it will take more energy to pull the air through the filter and since the motor/blower assembly is designed to handle a limited amount of static pressure for the CFM it moves.

If the static pressure capability for the blower/motor is 1.5 ” at rated CFM capacity and the plugged filter adds another .5 to 1.0″ of static load ( which it can do ) it will significantly reduce the air flow through the system as much as 50%. That means it takes much longer to heat or cool your home and it also puts a strain on your system in total. And, it will significantly reduce the ability to remove humidity from the home. Checking the condition of your air filter on a regular basis should be part of your routine.

Pure Air Systems makes a complete line of fan powered HEPA based air filtration systems. We can help you choose the right filter or filtration system for your home to ensure you always have your HVAC system working at its full capacity and that the air in your home is always well filtered.

Pure Air Systems HEPA Filtration System Rescues California Home During Fires

As everyone knows, being around smoke from a forest fire is extremely difficult and dangerous as smoke inhalation can be deadly. For California this past year, the forest fires have been nothing short of horrific. Many homes were lost and smoke hung in the air for weeks in many areas of California.

Pure Air Systems, an Indiana based company, has been making fan powered, HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. Their systems are capable of being used either in conjunction with an existing HVAC system or as stand alone units. The partial by-pass configuration of the units allow for complete filtration of the home environment while also adding the ability to introduce outside, filtered fresh air to pressurize the home.

A homeowner in the San Francisco area purchased a PAS Model 600HS HEPA Plus system to do just that. His ability to bring in outside air through the 600HS unit and pressurize his home allowed him to stay inside and almost eliminate any smoke or odor from coming into his home. In fact, many of his neighbors also came to his house to escape from the smoke that was everywhere in the SF Bay area.

The 600HS unit has three filters. A dual layer ring panel filter to capture large particles and keep the HEPA clean, a 10 lb carbon filter to remove odors and a scanned 99.99% commercial grade HEPA filter to remove sub micron particulate. Pure Air Systems also makes larger versions of this filtration system ranging from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. These systems have been on the market for over 34 years and are the best performing HEPA based air filtration systems on the market today.

Pure Air Systems Moves Into 34th Year Of Selling HEPA Air Filtration Systems

In 1985, Don Musilli founded a company to sell high end HEPA air filtration systems to the residential market. HEPA filtration at that time was somewhat limited to the micro-chip manufacturing industry, asbestos abatement companies, medical operations and some industrial applications. The residential market was using standard pleated, card board box framed general duty filtration media filters or electronic air cleaners. These air filters were located either in the main return air grills or at the point where all the return air entered the main air handler ( HVAC unit ) and were designed primarily to remove very large airborne particles and to keep the cooling coils and fan blades clean. They did little to remove the smaller, respirable sized particulate that could create health issues for many homeowners.

Whether we are indoors or outside, we are breathing air that contains various sizes of particulate. The larger particles. those that you can see with the naked eye, are usually 20 microns in size of larger. ( for comparison, your hair is 100 microns in diameter ). These larger particles are aspirated into our lungs and the majority of them are exhaled out. The smaller, sub-micron particles however, ( those less than 20 microns in size ) tend to stay logged in the lung linings and mucus membranes. These smaller particles may represent a wide range of organic and inorganic materials including pollen, pet dander, ragweed, bacteria, viruses and industrial pollution. For those individuals that suffer from allergies many of these airborne particulate are the primary cause of their respiratory dysfunctions.

Pure Air Systems pioneered the use of HEPA filtration systems with their first model 600H unit.that included a true, scanned HEPA filter rated at 99.99% removal of all particles 0.3 microns and larger, a wire framed ring panel prefilter ( to keep the HEPA clean ) and a true carbon filter to remove odors and gases. These systems were designed to attach to the return air side of a ducted HVAC system using the partial by-pass concept. This unique concept allowed homeowners, for the first time, to use a true HEPA filter system on a residential HVAC unit. These HEPA systems cleane all the air in the house up to 24 times a day and remove a very large percentage of the sub-micron, airborne particulate.

Thirty Four years later, PAS has added 6 more HEPA, fan powered, air filtration systems to its stable and over 10,000 of these units have been installed in homes and offices across the U.S. and Canada. Pressurizing Your Home With PAS HEPA Filtration Systems

The majority of most homeowners are not aware that if their HVAC system is not properly balanced, when the heating/cooling fan system comes on the house may be pulling in outside air into their environment. This is referred to as the house being negative. Since your home is not really air tight, anytime the HVAC fan comes on the system will pull air through the returns and push the cooled or heated air our the supply ducts and registers and if there is more return than supply outside air will come in and make up that difference.

This is a significant challenge as the air being pulled in from the outside will contain fine airborne particulate and some gaseous pollutants especially if you are near a road or high traffic area. This airborne dust is usually not captured in any of the air filters that are part of your HVAC system so this particulate matter will usually settle out on your floors, furniture and counter tops.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was created and it was one of the first companies to offer true fan powered, certified HEPA air filtration systems for the residential market. The first model, 600HS was designed to attach to the return air side of the ducted heating/cooling system and filter a portion of the air in the house constantly when the fan was running. In most cases it can filter all the air in the house 24 to 48 times per day.

One of the other advantages of this system was the inclusion of both a ring panel prefilter and true carbon media filter so removal of fine sub-micron particulate and gaseous pollutants was also accomplished. In addition, it is possible to introduce a small amount of outside air into the 600HS, or whichever PAS unit you are using, and this will fill filter any of the air coming into the house and help to maintain a more balance house pressure while still cleaning all the air in the house. And because this small amount of outside air is being introduced prior to the HVAC unit. all of it will be both filtered and heated or cooled.

Air Filtration For 3D Printing

The use of 3D Printers has grown 1000 % over the past few years. Many schools, businesses, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and individuals now own a 3D Printer. The majority of the printers used in the schools and homes are the smaller FFF or FDM filament style printers that print with various types of plastic or composites. These printers can print over 30 different materials and their tool head nozzles can reach temperatures at or above 300 degrees celsius ( 580 F ). When melting these materials during the printing operation, small amounts of sub-micron particulate are produced which depending upon the materials used for printing may create some health issues when inhaled by the user. Air filtration for 3D printing is now becoming a major concern.

Pure Air Systems, an Indiana based company, has been making HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. Their fan powered units range in volume from 50 CFM to 2000 CFM and their systems all use commercial grade HEPA’s, variable speed drive motors, industrial fans and all metal housings. In the past year a number of the PAS Portable units ( 250 CFM ) and the 600HS ( 600 CFM ) units have been used to filter the air from one or more filament style printers to remove the less than 20 micron sized particles from the air. HEPA filters used in the PAS units are certified at 99.99% at 0.3 microns. Much of the particulate generated by the printers is in the 1 to 10 micron range which can be inhaled and trapped in the lungs. Over time this could create some significant lung problems and severe side affects. More studies are being done all the time to determine the cause and affect.

In many cases the Pure Air Systems units are attached to special enclosures that are used to cover the printers and confine the particulate to one area. One of the better 3D Printer Enclosures is made by LiteWorld LLC., http://www.liteworldllc.com . The PAS units are very powerful allowing one of them to be used to filter the air for multiple printers.

Installing Pure Air Systems Filtration Systems On Horizontal HVAC Units

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing fan powered, HEPA based, commercial grade air filtration systems since 1985. With seven models to choose from PAS offers a system for any application in the residential, commercial, institutional, medical or industrial markets. Their systems can be attached to any type of ducted HVAC system or used in a stand-alone configuration.

Traditionally, the 600HS Plus L version was used on only up-flow HVAC systems located in a garage or basement. In some parts of the country, specifically areas of the South where there are no basements ( i.e. Florida ) a horizontal air handler is utilized. This makes is somewhat challenging to install the 600 HS L version as it can not connect to the return air side of the air handler due to the configuration. The PAS “S” version is a straight thru unit that could be mounted above the or to the side of the horizontal air handler or even in the attic area where space is available.

Like the L version of the 600HS, the “S” version is split into two symmetrical sections so you can rotate the discharge and inlet access doors to one of four positions thus allowing for installation anywhere so you always have access to the blower/motor and filter sections. The 600HS model produces 600 CFM of HEPA filtered air using a 1/3 HP variable speed drive motor. There is also a 1200HS Plus version, producing 1200 CFM of air and a 2000HS Plus version, producing 2,000 CFM of air. All of these units come in either the L or S versions. And, they can be wired to either connect to the HVAC system or use a digital speed controller to run the units manually from 1% to 100% in 1% increments for specific air flow requirements.
