Science Fair

Being involved with the local High School and Middle School science and engineering students in my area has given me the opportunity to attend and judge a number of Science Fairs. The entrants were both boys and girls and some were in the sixth grade competing with High School students. It is refreshing to see that there is a group of students that enjoy science and technology and the idea of creating something new and taking the time and effort to challenge their knowledge base.

Students also utilize the latest in digital technology to make their science projects state-of-the-art. For example, many of the students I have judged used at iPad or Tablet to tabulate their findings. In many cases these devices were used to take photos or movies of the progress of the science project as part of the conclusion. With all of the now available apps on the market, there is almost nothing one can’t do with a 10″ tablet the correct apps and some ingenuity.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing certified, commercial grade HEPA air filtration since 1985. From the beginning PAS looked at their systems designs much like entering a project in a Science Fair. Getting feedback from both commercial and residential customers, Pure Air Systems continually modified and improved its line of HEPA and Carbon based systems to meet or exceed the needs of their customers. In late 1990’s PAS incorporated the then, ECM variable speed motors into all of their systems. This major modification allowed for a motor that operated on 120 volts and 240 volts and 50/60 Hz.  In addition these digitally controlled motors could be programmed to automatically increase speed as the pressure drop across the HEPA filters increased with dirt load.

Having access to the world market also made PAS recognize the value developing a better, more effective and user friendly website. By adding a section called, “Pure Air University,” PAS was able to provide a great primer on the field of filters, HVAC system design, pressure drop, air flow and comparison data to show the efficiency of HEPA versus other type of mechanical and electronic filtration. Educating the customer makes it easier for them to better evaluate their options when it comes to selecting the best filtration systems for their application.

Improving the systems was a project shared by both PAS as well as their suppliers. The new HEPA filers now used in all the systems are scanned HEPA’s rated at 99.99% at 0.3 microns. This is an improvement from the original 99.97% efficiency of the HEPA filters. The small increase actually makes a difference especially in applications where a class 100 or less is required. In addition, better carbon and prefilter materials are used to assist in keeping the HEPA cleaner and removing more of the odors and gaseous pollutants that are often present in conjunction with airborne contaminants.
