Buffalo Wings

I was born in Buffalo, NY. One of the older cities in New York state on the Western edge. For all the things that Buffalo is known for its true claim-to-fame is that this is the town where Chicken Wings were born. Yes, those fried and sauce covered little pieces of Chicken that have now become a staple as an appetizer and must have food for any sporting event, are now Buffalo’s legacy. I am sure that there are other more notable things that Buffalo can be proud of but the wings are the thing.

Some companies have that same legend versus reality problem as well.  IBM which was once known for it’s business machines and especially its Typewriters, no longer makes any equipment and now does consulting as its primary business model. Yet when you mention IBM you think Typewriters and Computers.  There are so many new companies being formed by combining two older companies that it is hard to keep track of who does what and who owns whom.  Apple Computers were the first true computing devices on the market, and while they still  make computers their primary business is mostly mobile, digital equipment; namely the iPhone, iPad, iPod devices. Changes are very rapid today, and memories are lost quickly. That is one reason why companies have to keep re-inventing themselves so people recognize their name when attached to new products or concepts.

Pure Air Systems has been in business since 1985 and it’s primary claim to fame was the first HEPA system it produced, the 600 Hepa Shield. That system was the mainstay for the company for almost five years and during that time the unit under went two design changes and name change.  It is now the 600HS Plus or 600HS unit; the plus being the unit with the variable speed ECM motors. The 600H uses the standard single speed induction motor. And, since 1990 , PAS has designed and introduced 5 other models including the new HPS series of small portable units. Now, after almost 30 years in business, people still relate Pure Air Systems to the 600 Hepa Shield although that unit no longer exists.

The speed of change and speed of information and the rate of adaptation are astounding today. The younger generation will pick up a new product or device within days of its entry into the market. Years ago there were very few people that would consider buying new device that used new technology on the first day in the market. There are more early adapters today and more feedback on new products and ideas than at anytime in our history.  This rapid change in product technology has also changed the recognition factor of who makes what.

Writing these Blogs is one way for Pure Air Systems to keep its name and product association together. Another method is using Social Media, Facebook, Twitter and Pintrest as ways to connect to the digital society, which is growing every day.  Commenting on other similar products or taking a stand on a certain topic or issue is also a way to keep the general public aware of your name and associated products or services. Using Google Analytic’s is another way to verify that you are reaching your audience.

Like the folks who live in Buffalo,New York, most companies don’t want the public to perceive them as a one-hit wonder. After all there are only so many things you can do with Buffalo Wings.

Class II Medical Device

Eight years ago I designed a new portable HEPA filter unit, the last of 7 units I had developed since 1985. When Pure Air Systems was founded in 1985 it had one HEPA system to offer to its customers, the model 600H that eventually became the model 6ooHS. Bigger and more powerful systems were developed which formed a complementary line of commercial grade, certified, fan powered, HEPA based air filter sytems.

The last unit missing was a portable. The HPS 350 and 500 models were developed and completed in 2006 and rounded out the line of Pure Air Systems units. Unlike the larger PAS HEPA units, the HPS series was really designed to work in small areas, offices, laboratories, clinics, specialty applications and any area requiring the removal of sub-micron airborne particulate. Other applications for the unit also included use as a rental HEPA system for post-operative patient care, especially in bone marrow transplants and cancer patients undergoing chemo treatments. These patients have a much higher rate of bacterial infection due to destruction of their immune systems.

Enter the APPAIS System,  (Added Particulate Protection At Injection Site) unit. This is a modification of the HPS series of portable HEPA units. The main difference being the blower/motor assembly is turned 180 degrees and is now positioned to blow or push air through the HEPA unit rather than pull air through it. On the discharge section of the housing a fine mesh filter will be placed to keep any materials or fingers from puncturing the HEPA filter and the same style polyester prefilter is placed on the inlet side of the unit to take out the larger particles and keep the blower/motor and HEPA filter clean.

The controls are the same. The lighted on/off switch and four position speed switch are located on the right side of the unit, when looking at the front. The power cord with hospital grade male plug comes in on the left side of the unit. A top mounted handle was added to make carrying the unit easier and to double as a place to wind up the power cord when the unit is not in use.

The system is designed to be used to protect the patient when given an injection of any kind that is normally given in the upper arm area. The syringe is normally wrapped and protected prior to use. But when the syringe is needed the protective wrapping is removed, air is often drawn into the syringe to test it and then the syringe is placed into the serum container, filled to the appropriate levels then injected into the patients arm. This entire operation is often done in stores, pharmacies, clinics, Dr’s offices and hospitals. The air in the patient area is seldom clean and often much dirtier than even the patients own home. The possibility for infection is very high.

The APPAIS unit will blow HEPA filtered air over the patients arm, allow the medical technician to test fill the syringe in HEPA filtered air, thus making the entire procedure much less suspect for the development of an infection. These units are now going through FDA approval process.

Shark Dive

As an avid Scuba Diver I have had the privilege of diving in some of the most beautiful places on earth and in some of the best, most pristine dive sites. The under sea world is vastly different than what is above the surface. A much more serene environment that has a wide array of colors, creatures and coral formations that are not duplicated anywhere on land. When I talk to people who have never snorkeled or dove one of their first comments is how concerned am I in diving in the same oceans where there are Sharks.

There is a lot of misconception about diving with Sharks.I have done numerous dives with Sharks and occasionally run into some on many dive trips. Sharks and Divers get a long very well, contrary to what many people may believe.  Just because these creatures are aggressive animals when hunting in their natural environment doesn’t mean they are natural enemies of man. They are not. There is a mutual respect among man and these predators.

Often times in business we have the perception that a particular company, businessman or woman has taken an aggressive position in building their company. The use of acquisitions, mergers, pricing under the competition and hiring employees away from other firms is often looked at with contempt. Like the Shark who is often considered being the ruler of the deep, these dominant organizations are often viewed as predators.

In today’s “adapt-or-die” business environment, it is very difficult to not be viewed as an aggressor when the ability to succeed or fail depends upon your ability to battle with the rest of the Shark’s in the water. Even with patents and exclusive rights for properties and technology, it is becoming harder to differentiate your product from the competition.  So sometimes you have to resort to eating your competition…so to speak.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985. To survive in this vastly competitive market, PAS had to continuously re-invent itself and develop new products and got after larger markets in order to continue to grow. Starting from one system, PAS now has a very extensive line of commercial grade, certified HEPA based air filtration systems that are sold throughout the world. These units all use the newer ECM variable speed 120/240 volt, 50/60Hz digitally controlled motors and are capable of producing from 40 CFM up to 2,000 CFM of HEPA filtered air.

Pure Air Systems originally started selling their systems primarily for residential use. It was soon discovered that many small businesses, especially in the medical and high-tech sectors, needed commercial grade HEPA systems to maintain levels of airborne sub-micron particulate down to levels that could not be achieved with standard air filters. This usage lead to developing even larger systems and the addition of a brand new portable unit.

Today, Pure Air Systems is one of the leaders in high capacity, variable speed drive HEPA based air filtration systems for the commercial, institutional, medical, industrial and residential markets. If Their Lips Are Moving They’re Lying

Watching a political debate these days would be like watching the Christians and the Lions in the Roman Colosseum…you are not sure which one to root for. You want to believe one of the political participants actually knows what they are doing and has the ability to wear down their opponent with logical, rational thoughts and ideas. Unfortunately, it seems that the real purpose of the debate is to pummel each other with lies, half-truths, innuendo’s and dramatic body gestures. Unfortunately  this process has become more accepted over the years and now it is very difficult to tell who is lying and who is telling the truth. Hence the term..”If their lips are moving they’re lying.”

The business world, in many ways, shares the same primordial bent on information propaganda. In fact, it is easier today to start a controversy over a particular subject, product or process simply by indicating that your competitors product lacks a certain feature that yours offers. The feature may be minor and one that perhaps most of the owners of that product seldom use…but the propaganda will get traction as the social media pundits make the half-truths go viral. And in a matter of days the half-truths become major differences and the spinning begins. It is human nature.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems opened its doors and began to market a true, certified, commercial grade HEPA based, fan powered air filtration system. The 600H, as it was called, also included carbon media for odor and gaseous pollutant control. From the start, the process of marketing a then, little known technology, to the residential market was very challenging. Most people were familiar with electronic air cleaners and the new ozone systems that had just hit the market.

In 1985 HEPA filters were primarily used in the electronics industry, medical facilities and biological research laboratories. Few people outside these areas knew much about HEPA and even fewer understood how they worked. After all, fiberglass air filters and electronic air filters were the norm for most HVAC systems in the residential, commercial and institutional markets. Once the 600H unit was made available the competitors started throwing up unsubstantiated rumors about why the HEPA filters could not be used in a normal HVAC system or that they were too expensive, etc, etc. One thing that they could not compete with was the absolute performance of the HEPA filters to remove 99% of all airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger from the air. The fiberglass and electronic filter devices could, at best, remove very small percentages of particles even 20 microns in size. Most harmful particulate is smaller than 1 micron in diameter.

It took a number of years to convince the public and commercial markets that the HEPA systems offered by Pure Air Systems were the best alternative for reduction and/or removal of airborne particulate in any application. The proof of the pudding was, as they say, in the tasting. Consistent performance, reliability and access to truthful and reliable information gave PAS the success it has today. It is easier to  bend the truth and incorporate half-truths than to prove yourself right by constant performance. But in the end the truth will win out.

Chrysis

Aside from writing blogs I am also a fan of new technologies like Nanotechnology and OLED technology. In fact a blog/novella I am writing incorporates these two scientific advances.  In addition, I am also a closet XBox game player…mostly of the first shooter variety. I have played and completed the entire Halo series of games and now have embarked on a new journey with the popular franchise game “Chrysis.”  The Chrysis character has a Nano suit that allows him to create certain defensive postures. He can make himself invisible by turning on the “Cloaking” device or repel bullets and other weapons by switching to “Nano Armor.” With the advances in Nanotechnology today the reality of wearing this type of suit is much more science faction than science fiction. Since we will have to wait a while before this type of protective clothing is available we continue to rely on best practices to avoid the elements of life that can do us harm.

We live and breathe in an environmental soup of sorts. Inside homes, buildings, schools, hospitals, libraries, etc. ,etc, we have hundreds of airborne contaminants floating across our noses and mouths as we take in that next breath of life-giving air. Unfortunately that breath of air can contain thousands of sub-micron organisms and particulates that, over time, can create some significant health issues. Out doors in the towns and cities we have a wide range of airborne contaminants to deal with such as; carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide from car exhausts, particulate effluents from factories and other industrial sources. And, we have our sun. The sun gives us light, heat, warmth, vitamin D and the preceding letter in the alphabet,  C, as in Cancer. Yes, a Nano suit would be a nice option.

Pure Air Systems has  been manufacturing commercial grade HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. HEPA filters are the most effective mechanical devices for removal and/or reduction of the small, sub-micron particles that can be harmful to the human body. In addition, the PAS systems also incorporate Carbon media filters to adsorb harmful odors and gaesous pollutants that can create severe respiratory health issues. These systems come in a variety of capacities ( CFM ) and configurations designed to fit any commercial, industrial, institutional, medical or residential need.

When properly used and configured, the PAS HEPA systems can provide for a near-clean room environment. This feature provides for better, safer and healthier work and living environments and is as close to a Nano suit that you can currently purchase. And, while the PAS systems can’t protect you from the outdoor environment, they can at least give you 8 to 12 hours of protection in the comfort of your home.

Enter Sandman

Just like some songs become more iconic as they get older, some products are better appreciated over time. This increase in appreciation  is usually a result of both past and future comparisons of other songs or other products that promised performance and value. Once we begin to realize that what we heard before from some musical group (in this case Metallica) or the performance of lesser expensive, similar products that failed to live up to their hype, the appreciation of what we have is increased 100 fold.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. Their use of HEPA filters early on in the “air filtration” and “indoor air quality” era was somewhat of a “odd man out” process. Up until, the mid-70’s and early 80’s, HEPA filters were used exclusively in the commercial electronics industry. Some were used in the asbestos removal market and some in the medical industry but none were used in the residential market.

During the early years of air filtration products for the home market, electronic, electrostatic and ozone generators dominated the scene. The makers of these relatively inexpensive devices made all sorts of claims include the ability for these systems to be as effective as HEPA filters in removing harmful airborne allergens from the air. As people began to use these ‘air purifiers” they realized there was more hype than substance to the products. Some people even went as far as to purchase four or five different air filtration devices, each a little more expensive than the last, hoping to find a product that was as good as a HEPA system before eventually purchasing a HEPA unit from PAS.

Today, with over 20,000 units in the field and 28 years in business, Pure Air Systems has developed a strong following of customers from all phases of industry, the medical profession and residential and commercial markets. The acceptance of HEPA based filtration over other methods is fairly common especially in the light that all hospital surgery suites, the CDC, micro-chip fabricators, optics companies, Homeland Security and others now only use true, commercial grade, certified HEPA filters for all their critical operations.  The continued use and purchase of the PAS products confirms the systems perform at or above expectations for the applications to which they are applied.

Looking back on the early days of air filtration devices, filters and processes one has to remember that knowledge of indoor air quality and the ability to deal with those issues was an on-going learning lessen for everyone involved. But because there were significant performance requirements needed for airborne particulate removal the market quickly determined that moving up the ladder in quality, performance and durability was the best solution to their air quality needs.

Morbius

In 1956 the movie Forbidden Planet was released and it was one of the best science fiction movies for its time. One of the main characters, Dr. Morbius, played by Walter Pidgeon, had found the remains of an advanced society known as the Krell. The Krell developed a brain boost device that enabled Dr. Morbius to increase his IQ well over 200. The result was a series of wonderful engineering feats accomplished by the good Dr. that eventually became his own demise.

The advancements being made in technology continue to amaze people even today. Science fiction novels and movies of the past 50 years had imagined technologies and devices one could only dream about. Today science fiction has become more science faction. Digital communications devices, space travel, nanotechnology, robots, holograms are all now part of our world and the hits keep on coming. We all carry a smart phone that is capable of accessing all the knowledge in the world and anyone anywhere at anytime. Some advancements in technology, like 3-D Printers have the ability to revolutionize the world…and at the same time create opportunities for evil doers of the world to create harmful technologies. Like Morbius, one has to be careful of what we develop for the betterment of mankind.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems developed one of the first commercially designed, fan powered HEPA air filtration system to be used in a residential application. Very few people knew of or heard of HEPA filters as they were primarily used in the electronics industry and somewhat in the medical industry.  Trying to explain the benefits and features of HEPA filters to the uneducated market was very difficult since most homeowners had never heard the term HEPA before and had even less knowledge of air filters. In the early 80’s electronic air cleaners were still being sold and installed on many HVAC systems and media filters were usually the fiberglass, see-thru cardboard frame types that at best could capture large, leaf-sized objects.

New ideas, concepts, change often bring a lot of anxiety to the masses. It usually takes some significant issue to get people to focus on a subject and take some time to understand it. The advent of “sick building syndrome” in the mid 80’s got the attention of homeowners and building owners alike. The lack of fresh outside air, toxic fumes from building materials and furniture and the lack of any type of filtration for the recycled air in the homes and offices forced the nation to rethink the issue of Indoor Air Quality.

Pure Air Systems developed six new commercial grade HEPA units since its inception in 1985 and is considered one of the leaders in high volume HEPA systems that can be used either attached to existing HVAC and air handler units or as stand-alone systems. Used throughout the world, the HEPA systems from PAS continue to lead the way in performance and quality. Using the most advanced variable speed drive motors and digital controllers, the HEPA systems by Pure Air Systems are proving they are much more than science fiction. Just ask Morbius.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

In 1958 the Platters released a new song titled, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” This song has since been recorded by hundreds of artists over the years. It has been used in more than 50 movies as either the main theme song or one of the tunes as a way to emphasis a certain feeling or emotion. The Platters went on to record a number of other hits, but this one tune has had more impact than all their other well-known songs.

Whether it’s smoke from a cigarette, leaf fire, charcoal grill or exhaust fumes from an oil burning car, smoke will quickly and substantially irritate your eyes; with symptoms ranging from mild irritation to watering eyes, burning sensations, partial or complete blindness that can linger for long periods of time. These symptoms don’t include the choking, coughing, respirable irritation that accompanies the watering eyes. Anyway you slice it, ( and sometimes smoke is so thick you can slice it with a knife), exposing your eyes to smoke is not a good thing.

Interesting that in industrial facilities or manufacturing facilities where respirators are required, often the only eye protection is from safety glasses. While these protect the eyes from large flying particles, they do nothing to keep fine, airborne dust or smoke particles from entering your eyes. Small amounts of contaminants over long periods of  time can be just as damaging as large concentrations over short periods of time. Protection from or removal of the smoke particles is critical.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based commercial grade, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985. Removal of very high percentages of very tiny, sub-micron particles is their primary function. The HEPA systems offered by Pure Air Systems ( PAS) have an initial efficiency of 99.99% removal of all particle 0.3 microns or lager. And, approach 95% removal of all particles 0.12 microns and larger.  Since smoke is fairly visible with the naked eye, one assumes that smoke can be easily removed by the  HEPA units. While this is mostly true, it is not what you can see that hurts you, it is what you don’t see, and there-in lies the problem.

The visible smoke is extremely large, measuring more than 20 microns in size up to and over 100 microns in size. These larger particles are normally aspirated in and then expelled from the lungs. These larger particles are also more easily washed away by the tears that form in your eyes when subjected to high concentrations of smoke. However, the smaller, invisible smoke particles; those less than 20 microns in size, are easily ingested into the body and are not as easily removed by the tear ducts in your eyes. It is these smaller particles that cause all the damage and the majority of them can be removed by the use of HEPA filters.

Smoke is an irritant and should be treated as one. Even smoke from candles can be a problem when used in small, confined areas. The black soot-like particles that come from the wick ( both old and new styles ) is also very tiny and should be considered a threat to your body.

HEPA Filters As Good As A Flu Shot

This year the flu has hit the US very hard. I was up in Indiana for the Christmas Holidays and the majority of the friends and relatives we visited were either sick or just getting over the flu. This story was played out across the US and as of last report 47 of the 50 states had major out breaks of the flu. Coming back to Florida after the New Year I found that the vast majority of those Floridians that went up north to visit relatives were also suffering from the flu bug. Airborne viruses are very difficult to control.

The recommended medical approach to dealing with the flu is to get a flu shot in the summer or early fall to avoid the flu season which usually runs from October through March. And, for many people this preventative measure works. Although while it is possible to get the flu even if you have the shot, the symptoms are usually less severe and are short lived.

Since the flu virus is airborne, sub-micron in size and easily transferred from any infected surface, it is difficult to be in an enclosed structure that uses a forced air fan heating/cooling unit to not have contact with the virus when half the people in the structure are now infected. So when one person gets it..chances are others will as well. I believe many of us saw this take place over Christmas and New Years. Even wearing a mask may not help as the flu virus can live for short periods of time on many surfaces and then it is easily transferred to your hands and then eventually your face ( as we touch our faces up to 500 times per day).

Commercial grade HEPA filters are designed to remove, at a minimum, 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger with efficiencies approaching over 95% on particles smaller than 0.3 microns.  Viruses range in size from .006 microns to 0.5 microns in size. HEPA filters are the primary filtration media used by the CDC and other laboratories around the world that work with highly contagious and deadly viruses. They are extremely effective at protecting the technicians who work with these contagions.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified, HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. They are one of the leaders in offering a wide range of HEPA systems that can be digitally controlled to produce from 50 CFM to 2000 CFM. The PAS line of HEPA systems utilize the ECM variable speed motors that are rate 120/240v 50/60 Hz and can be used anywhere in the world. These units are fabricated from powder coated steel and use state-of-the-art digital control systems.  Since its inception, PAS has sold tens of thousands of its units to the residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, medical and specialty products markets in the North American continent and around the world.

The use of PAS HEPA systems in the residential market has shown over time that those homeowners have experienced fewer colds, allergies and flu symptoms than homeowners that just use standard air filters in their HVAC systems. Of course you can’t carry a HEPA filter around with you to work or the store, but you can significantly reduce the transfer of airborne viruses and allergens in your household or small office area with a very high degree of effectiveness.

Filtration Cliff

There is no lack of comment, opinion and overblown diatribe regarding the upcoming potential “fiscal cliff.” The politicos love to be able to scare people by predicting economic catastrophe if certain members of either party don’t come to a consensus on how to resolve this problem. The interesting thing is that even if the parties don’t agree something will happen without their involvement or decision. And, chances are that all this partisan posturing will be replaced with a compromise that will give credit to both parties while making the right decision for the American public. Disaster averted!

In the field of air filtration there are often two distinct approaches to resolving the same problem. And, like the political parties, one is often more correct than the other. More over, the right decision will have a very positive effect over a very long period of time and for a large number of individuals.

The removal of airborne particles from indoor air environments has always employed some type of mechanical filter. Cloth medias, fiberglass filters, cotton fiber filters and the man made medias ( including HEPA ) have been around for over 70 years. Mechanical filters are simple in nature. They capture the airborne particles that are drawn through them ( usually by a fan or air moving device) and the larger particles get caught in the media fibers while some of the tiny particles pass through. Over time as the filter media loads up, or gets dirtier, even most of the smaller particles are caught in the filter. In the case of HEPA filters, sub-micron particles are captured at efficiencies approaching 99.99% at less than 0.3 microns in size.

One other type of filtration device was also developed and used in the early 50’s and a variation of that technology is still use today. The electronic air cleaner was a simple device that used positive/negative charges to attract particles as they passed through a charged wire grid. The earlier versions were not very effective except for capturing very large particles. The newer versions are slightly better but this technology is really not appropriate for any applications except general duty residential.

In the 70’s another style of air filtration device hit the market. However, these devices were referred to as air purifiers and not air filters. These consisted of ozone generators and ionizers. They did not use any type of media and were touted as being able to purify the air in your home or office and no filters needed to be changed. Simply wipe the attraction plates or replace a small component part once in a while and you had all the clean air you could ask for. Unless you really wanted it to actually work at removing airborne particles.

Air purifiers are simply not capable of eliminating the harmful, sub-micron, airborne particles and allergens in the air. This is the reason that hospitals, laboratories, chip manufacturers, optics companies, the CDC, etc. etc. do not use air purifiers for any application. They rely only on mechanical filters such as HEPA filters. But, the discussion continues to rage on and there are proponents on both sides of the equation.
