The Reason For The Decline In US Manufacturing

In 2006, almost all of the US based companies that made the majority of the components used in the line of Pure Air Systems fan powered, HEPA based air filtration systems, closed up their R&D and Manufacturing centers and moved them overseas. Many went to China. They only left the sales and management operations in the US. There are a number reasons for this departure.

China and other countries in the far east started to compete with US manufactured goods and they were less expensive and just as good as those made here. Since most of the larger manufacturing companies are publicly held their shareholders were concerned that trying to compete head-to-head on price was not feasible and they did not want to lose any of their profit margins. Secondly, it is very, very, very expensive to build and operate a manufacturing operation. It requires a lot of equipment and experienced, well-trained technicians and engineers. Over the years those people entering the engineering field of study dropped off precipitously. So they decided to minimize their losses and have their products made overseas.

Over time the public came to accept products made in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, etc. and the advent of Amazon changed the way everyone purchased everything without caring about the manufacturing origin. This coupled with the fact that the new generation of workers are primarily involved in the digital world and have little or no interest in working with their hands and see no future in that arena. Their future belongs to AI, Additive Manufacturing, Robotics and VR and AR technologies.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, high performance HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985 and now one of only three companies in the world that currently manufacture this type of equipment.

Commercial HEPA Air Filtration Systems

Started in 1985, Pure Air Systems has been making commercial grade, fan-powered, true HEPA air filtration systems for over 38 years. The same high quality metal fabricated housings used then are still used today. High quality ECM motors and metal framed HEPA filters along with carbon media and ring panel prefilters are all part of the various systems offered by Pure Air Systems.

PAS makes units a number of systems ranging in air flow from 50 CFM up to 2000 CFM. These units are configured so they can be mounted either as stand-alone units or as part of an existing, ducted HVAC system. The powder coated painted 16 gauge steel housings can be mounted in side or outdoors depending upon the application.

The ECM motors provide for variable speed control using digital controllers or run by a computer system. In addition, they can be used in a a120 volt 60Hz electrical system or 240 volt 50 Hz system. This means they can be use in any location around the world.

HEPA filters are the best method of removing over 99.9995% of all particles 0.3 microns in size and larger and approach 99.99% for particles as small as 0.12 microns. They are used in all hospital and medical facilities and in commercial, military and residential markets.

Pet Dander Is Not Removed By Furnace Filters

One of the strongest allergens is pet dander, especially cat dander and their reactions can be from mild irritation to full-blown respiratory distress. Dander is basically skin flakes that are shed by any animal, including humans.

These skin flakes can be airborne for short periods of time but usually too heavy to be carried by the air currents in any home or building environment for any period of time. If a cat or dog is running through the house and runs by someone who is allergic to dander, there may be enough dander in the air to cause a reaction. If that person comes in contact with the animal then the dander can attach itself to their clothing or is discarded on the furniture from where they may lay. Once the person inhales the skin flakes their specific allergic reaction will begin and may last for a number of hours or all day.

Because the dander is not always airborne, the air filters in your return air intake will not see much of that airborne particulate. It is often better to use a portable air filter such as a HEPA filter that uses a fan to pull the air through the room. These can be placed in a bedroom or family room, preferably where the animals do not often track. This will keep that area cleaner and a more significantly reduced level of animal dander.

Pure Air Systems offers a small, powerful, adjustable speed HEPA filter unit that is only 21 inches long and 13 inches square. It can move up to 500 CFM and has a variable speed motor for infinite air flow adjustment. It is easy to carry and can be placed on a table or even the floor if necessary. Putting a filtration device in a area that is considered a safe zone for humans offers the best option for keeping animal dander to a minimum.

Portable HEPA Filter With Variable Speed Motor

Founded in 1985, Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, fan powered, HEPA filtration systems with a wide range of performance. Beginning with their 600HS Plus, PAS has been adding variable speed motors to their line up since 1999 and now offers a new variable speed motor for their HPS 250 portable unit. This unit. first introduced in 2000, used a four speed EBM motor/blower unit and offered air flows from 50 CFM to 250 CFM and immediately became a major addition to the product line.

The new variable speed motor now offers the same advantages it provides in the models, 600HS, 1200HS and 2000HS units. The ability to have finite control over the air flow to exactly match the needed performance of the unit depending upon the application. Since the portable unit is most often used in a smaller environment such as a laboratory, clinic, semi-clean room or medical facility, the control of speed also allows for control of the noise level. In addition, using the new motor allowed PAS to use a fan blade design that has better air flow and performance over the range of the life of the HEPA filter as well as minimizing fan noise. And like the variable speed motors used in the other systems, this one can be programmed to automatically ramp up and maintain the same speed even as the HEPA filter loads up and the static pressure increases.

This new unit will be available soon. For more information on this updated unit and the complete line of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems please go to our website at:  http://pureairsystems.com    or call us on our toll-free number at: 800-869-8025.

Pure Air Systems Shares Rarified Air

Created in 1985 by Don Musilli, Pure Air Systems was one of many companies offering air filtration systems for the commercial and residential markets. But the separation from the competition began shortly thereafter. From the beginning, PAS used an all metal housings, Lau Blowers, GE Motors and commercial grade prefiters, carbon media and HEPA filters. The initial units sold for $695.00. Over time, PAS added other units to their line up and in 1998 became one of the first powered fan filter companies to use the new GE ECM variable speed drive motors.

The addition of the new motors and expansion to a 9,000 sq. ft. building allowed PAS to expand their product line to 7 different size air filtration systems all of them now using the upgraded, digitally controlled variable speed drive motors. The ability for the motors to be 120/240 50/60 Hz created a new market overseas for the larger systems. The new HPS portable unit opened the doors to more medical markets and the Covid – 19 global pandemic created a whole new market for commercial grade HEPA air filtration systems.

Today, there are only two other companies in the world that make a fan powered, commercial grade HEPA air filtration unit handling up to 2,000 CFM and as low as 50 CFM. With material costs for metal and other components increasing rapidly, it is much more difficult for companies to offer products such as the ones from Pure Air Systems.

High Performance HEPA Portable By Pure Air Systems

Pure Air Systems has been making commercial grade, fan powered HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. They are one of three companies in the world that provide this type of filtration systems. PAS makes a number of models of HEPA systems that range from 600 CFM to 2000 CFM all using variable speed drive motors. Their portable system, the HPS series was introduced around 1992 and has since gone through a number of refinements. It was the only HEPA unit in the line-up that did not use a variable speed drive motor. In stead, it used a 4 speed motor from EBM.

Coming this year, PAS will be fitting the popular portable HPS unit wiith it’s own variable speed drive motor. This will allow for a CFM range from 25 CFM up to 250 CFM in 1% increments. In addition, the new motor will be designed to maintain the same speed/cfm rating even as the pressure drop increses across the HEPA filter. And likes the original version, the new HPS unit will have a prefilter, carbon filter and a true 99.99% scanned HEPA fitler as standard equipment.

The portable HEPA unit has a wide range of applications and is very well suited fror the laboratory environment as well as small confined areas requiring HEPA filtraiton in both a positive or negative room application. The all metal housing and rugged construction make this one of the best portable HEPA systems on the global market.

Portable HEPA Filter Systems For Any Application

There are many commercial and institutional applications where a true HEPA filtration system is required but space and time of need is limited. Pure Air Systems, based in Indianapolis, manufactures a complete line of HEPA and Carbon based, fan powered air filtration systems that range in air flow capacity from 50 CFM to 2,000 CFM. These systems use high end blowers and motors and are framed in all metal housings.

The HPS model portable units from Pure Air Systems have a four speed motor/blower, a ring panel prefilter/carbon media filter and a true, scanned HEPA rated at 99.99% at 0.3 microns and larger. These portable units are 13″ square by 24″ long and weigh only 34 lbs. These units are very powerful and can move up to 250 CFM of HEPA filtered air. While these units are often used in small laboratories, hospital rooms, nursing homes, clinics and mobile trailers, they are a perfect filtration system for the home and office.

The powerful fans allow you to use this system either as a stand-alone system or attached to duct work so they can move air through a fairly large area and can also be used to provide positive or negative air pressure in any enclosed space. The PAS HPS series are the most powerful portable HEPA units on the market today and the average length of time in service of 15 years.

Pure Air Systems also offers a complete line of HEPA based systems that are designed with unique configurations so that you can install a unit in any location with the ability to have the inlet and discharge in any direction for best installation and performance. PAS offers 7 different orientations for all of its systems with the exception of the portable unit.

Misdirection

When magicians place a person in a box, cover the box, then pull the cover away within seconds and the person is gone, this trick is often referred to as misdirection or sometimes called slight of hand. In either case the idea is to get you to look one way while the action is actually taking place somewhere else. Simple, effective and easily done by trained entertainers who couch themselves as Magicians.

Misdirection was, and in many cases still is, used often in the early 30’s and 40’s when a peddler selling a product would demonstrate the operation and value of the item to the audience. When you purchased the item, always packed in a box, took it home it often didn’t work or would not perform at the same level as described by the salesmen. When you went to return the item the seller was often no where to be seen. Even today with the “As Seen On TV” products flood the dollar stores and discount houses, the products often fail to meet the perceived expectations.

The technicians at Pure Air Systems have been manufacturing commercial grade, certified, fan powered HEPA based air filtration systems  since 1985. From the beginning the systems produced by PAS always met or exceeded the performance expectations of their customers. The PAS systems are a more expensive product than some of the other non-HEPA based filtration, air purification and electronic air cleaners currently on the market. Unfortunately many of these “lesser performing devices” claim to provide the same particle reduction capabilities as HEPA filters, but at a lower cost.

Often times a new Pure Air Systems customer will try one, two or more alternate “air filtration/purification” devices before they actually purchase one of the seven different HEPA models offered by PAS. The other “HEPA Type” or “HEPA Like” companies provide inaccurate information as to the overall ability of their products to remove and/or reduce the levels of harmful airborne particulates and contaminants. But because the systems are less expensive individuals will buy the hype only to find their is truth in the statement, “you get what you pay for.”

This is not to say that other types of filtration and purification systems are effective. But for those companies, institutions and medical operations that require initial efficiency’s of 99.99% at 0.3 microns or larger, then the only option they have is to use the HEPA based systems by Pure Air Systems. Don’t be fooled by the imitators.

Shark Dive

As an avid Scuba Diver I have had the privilege of diving in some of the most beautiful places on earth and in some of the best, most pristine dive sites. The under sea world is vastly different than what is above the surface. A much more serene environment that has a wide array of colors, creatures and coral formations that are not duplicated anywhere on land. When I talk to people who have never snorkeled or dove one of their first comments is how concerned am I in diving in the same oceans where there are Sharks.

There is a lot of misconception about diving with Sharks.I have done numerous dives with Sharks and occasionally run into some on many dive trips. Sharks and Divers get a long very well, contrary to what many people may believe.  Just because these creatures are aggressive animals when hunting in their natural environment doesn’t mean they are natural enemies of man. They are not. There is a mutual respect among man and these predators.

Often times in business we have the perception that a particular company, businessman or woman has taken an aggressive position in building their company. The use of acquisitions, mergers, pricing under the competition and hiring employees away from other firms is often looked at with contempt. Like the Shark who is often considered being the ruler of the deep, these dominant organizations are often viewed as predators.

In today’s “adapt-or-die” business environment, it is very difficult to not be viewed as an aggressor when the ability to succeed or fail depends upon your ability to battle with the rest of the Shark’s in the water. Even with patents and exclusive rights for properties and technology, it is becoming harder to differentiate your product from the competition.  So sometimes you have to resort to eating your competition…so to speak.

Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based, fan powered air filtration systems since 1985. To survive in this vastly competitive market, PAS had to continuously re-invent itself and develop new products and got after larger markets in order to continue to grow. Starting from one system, PAS now has a very extensive line of commercial grade, certified HEPA based air filtration systems that are sold throughout the world. These units all use the newer ECM variable speed 120/240 volt, 50/60Hz digitally controlled motors and are capable of producing from 40 CFM up to 2,000 CFM of HEPA filtered air.

Pure Air Systems originally started selling their systems primarily for residential use. It was soon discovered that many small businesses, especially in the medical and high-tech sectors, needed commercial grade HEPA systems to maintain levels of airborne sub-micron particulate down to levels that could not be achieved with standard air filters. This usage lead to developing even larger systems and the addition of a brand new portable unit.

Today, Pure Air Systems is one of the leaders in high capacity, variable speed drive HEPA based air filtration systems for the commercial, institutional, medical, industrial and residential markets. Coastal Differences

The differences between the east and west coast are significant. The only similarity is the comparison between LA/SF and New York City. All three of these cities are considered the ultimate destinations and take pride in being the more avant garde of all the cities in the US. New technologies and innovation seem to come more from the West coast than the east coast, however, the Midwest continues to be the major supplier of manufactured goods and  machinery.

This differences are not only based on the company styles and culture but the differences in the demographics as well. The younger, under 45 crowd tends to be the major population base in many parts of California, Oregon and Washington. Although places like Austin, Texas also revel in commanding the young professionals and entrepreneurs. New York has a broad mixture but still a large percentage of those in the greater New York City area are the new “whatever letter they call them” generation. In either coast, the manufacturing of new products seems to be usurped by the development of digital software, apps and enterprise systems. While many of these products have proven to be valuable to our marketing and social media infrastructure, they don’t come close in monetary or job creation like hard technologies.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing certified, commercial grade HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. Their roots are in the Midwest where manufacturing had and still has its base. The ability to develop these high end units using state-of-the-art ECM motors and electrical components was made easier by being closer to the geographical center of  manufacturing in the US. It is interesting to note, however, that a large majority of the PAS units are shipped to commercial and residential customers alike in the two coastal areas.

In addition, PAS ships a substantial number of units overseas to all continents where they are mostly used in the commercial, institutional and medical markets. Since the blower/motor systems are rated 120/240 volt 50/60 Hz, the units can be utilized anywhere in the world.

The HEPA units are capable of producing up to 2000 CFM of air through certified, scanned HEPA filters that have an initial efficiency of 99.99% at 0.3 microns. All of the PAS units also incorporate granular activated carbon filters for the reduction and/or removal of gaseous pollutants. In this way the systems are capable of being used in applications where airborne particulates are present along with odors or gases. Since these units use powerful motors ( up to 1 HP ) they can be used to move air through duct work and are often used to either make a room positive or negative depending upon the requirements.

Today PAS is looking at building a new system specifically designed for the medical market and this system will be fabricated in the east coast area. This is a departure from its Midwest roots but a necessary part of its growth going forward. More information on this new product will be in future blogs on this site.
