There is little truth in the fact that many of the companies that are overseas will now return to U.S. shores. Unfortunately, all the companies overseas are either owned and operated locally or are part of an international partner. For all intents and purposes, the U.S. has pretty much given up on building new manufacturing plants as most larger corporations would rather design products here and have them made somewh   ere else. Or if they are going to manufacture in the U.S. they will be using Robotics and few people.

Even though the industrial market has changed and many products are now made overseas, there are many small, specialty manufacturing operations that are using welders, sanders, chemical processes and semi-cleanroom manufacturing systems.

Most of these operations are done inside of small shops or buildings and all of them require some form of dust or gaseous odor control. In 1985 and idea to use commercial grade, fan-powered HEPA based air filtration systems was devised by Don Musilli. The concept of using a large HEPA system in conjunction with a standard, forced air, heating/cooling system was never tried before. Normally, contractors just installed a standard pleated air filters or in the early days they used electronic air cleaners, which never really worked that well.

When Pure Air Systems was formed it was a long work in progress and working out of a home office with one old computer and the first use of what was to become the internet as we know it now, but then it was primarily only a landing page and you either used AOL.com or Yahoo.com. Both start-ups. Years later as PAS grew we formed our own URl and found that the use of the World Wide Web had become a very important part of our marketing program which provided almost 60% of our sales leads. 

10 years later after working out of our home and garage we finally had enough money to purchase some land and build a 9,000 square foot building and starting designing different sized units and our sales started to really grow as we added some systems that were four times the size and power of our original 600H unit. By 1999 we started to use the new GE ECM variable speed drive motors that were capable of running at any speed and could be used anywhere in the world. 

By the early 2000’s we had developed 7 different systems that could be used either as stand-alone units or attached to an existing HVAC system and for almost any commercial, industrial, consumer or institutional application. We had to develop a new way to package the units as we had decided to divide each unit into two sections. One housed the blower/Motor and controls and the other half had the three filters. A polyester ring panel prefilter, a carbon media filter and a true commercial grade, certified HEPA filter. We could also use higher grade SULPA  filters for certain applications.

In essence, the Arrow of Time Theory states that we tend to look at future technology and processes by carrying things from the past and putting them into these future ideas and concepts. This is very limiting as it tends to eliminate advanced or out of the box thinking with the resulting new concepts having parts of our old thinking linked with them. The WW II generation is almost gone from this planet and the Vietnam era baby boomers are now retiring. The WW II generation was mostly responsible for the age of manufacturing in the US and the baby boomers brought the age of technology to the world. For the most part, manufacturing has been transferred to other countries and technology in all its forms is now the booming industry in America. It has been repeated many times online and in articles in every type of publication that we tend to not become fearful of things we can not see. You can either put you head in the proverbial sand like the Ostrich and believe this is not a problem or grasp the real issue of this virus being around forever and changing and adapting to the new vaccines that are currently on the market. Removing odors and gaseous pollutants from any environment is much difficult than removing airborne particulate. There are a number of air filter types that can easily remove airborne dust, but the removal of airborne odors and gases requires some very specific materials that can effectively adsorb these organic or inorganic molecules.

The most common material used to remove odors is activated carbon ( charcoal) which comes in a number of sizes. The most common is cocoanut shell carbon that is usually around 1/4″ in size and is often enclosed in a mesh type material or sometimes in a fine opening screen container. Carbon can be used in both air and water for the extraction of gaseous pollutants, making it one of the more popular materials on the market.

When cocoanut shells are placed in a high temperature oven under pressure it expands the surface area of the material and then makes it into a carbon material. The expansion to the shell gives the material a very high surface area and the ability to adsorb up to 100 times its own weight in gaseous pollutants. This means that a small amount of carbon material can remove a large amount of the odors and last a long period of time.
