It has been repeated many times online and in articles in every type of publication that we tend to not become fearful of things we can not see. Removing odors and gaseous pollutants from any environment is much difficult than removing airborne particulate. There are a number of air filter types that can easily remove airborne dust, but the removal of airborne odors and gases requires some very specific materials that can effectively adsorb these organic or inorganic molecules.

The most common material used to remove odors is activated carbon ( charcoal) which comes in a number of sizes. The most common is cocoanut shell carbon that is usually around 1/4″ in size and is often enclosed in a mesh type material or sometimes in a fine opening screen container. Carbon can be used in both air and water for the extraction of gaseous pollutants, making it one of the more popular materials on the market.

When cocoanut shells are placed in a high temperature oven under pressure it expands the surface area of the material and then makes it into a carbon material. The expansion to the shell gives the material a very high surface area and the ability to adsorb up to 100 times its own weight in gaseous pollutants. This means that a small amount of carbon material can remove a large amount of the odors and last a long period of time.

The Chevy Nova was made in the early 60’s through part of the 70’s and was somewhat popular as a mid sized, low cost vehicle. In the 60’s Eric Burton of the rock group The Animals sang a song about a lost soul. The name of the song was Tobacco Road. The animals and song went on to become an iconic part of early rock and roll. Along the same lines the product tobacco had also become one the most influential soft drugs in the US and around the world. Creating a room that meets the criteria considered class 1000 ( maximum of 1000 particles per cubic foot at 0.3 microns) usually requires special construction and an air handler system that includes HEPA filters and a motor/blower system capable of moving 2,000 CFM or higher of filtered air in a positive pressure environment. This design is both expensive and takes a fair amount of time to construct.

Using one of the larger HEPA Shield systems, made by Pure Air Systems, would provide a system that could be easily convert any room into a clean room or temporary surgery suite. The 2000HS unit comes with a 1HP programmable, variable speed drive motor, prefilter, carbon media filter and true, commercial grade 99.99% scanned HEPA Filter. The 2,000 CFM unit can be placed in the ceiling area or along the top of a wall attached to sections of sheet metal ductwork with diffusers located in various parts of the ceiling area.
