The majority of most homeowners are not aware that if their HVAC system is not properly balanced, when the heating/cooling fan system comes on the house may be pulling in outside air into their environment. This is referred to as the house being negative. Since your home is not really air tight, anytime the HVAC fan comes on the system will pull air through the returns and push the cooled or heated air our the supply ducts and registers and if there is more return than supply outside air will come in and make up that difference. 

This is a significant challenge as the air being pulled in from the outside will contain fine airborne particulate and some gaseous pollutants especially if you are near a road or high traffic area. This airborne dust is usually not captured in any of the air filters that are part of your HVAC system so this particulate matter will usually settle out on your floors, furniture and counter tops.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was created and it was one of the first companies to offer true fan powered, certified HEPA air filtration systems for the residential market. The first model, 600HS was designed to attach to the return air side of the ducted heating/cooling system and filter a portion of the air in the house constantly when the fan was running. One of the other advantages of this system was the inclusion of both a ring panel prefilter and true carbon media filter so removal of fine sub-micron particulate and gaseous pollutants was also accomplished. In addition, it is possible to introduce a small amount of outside air into the 600HS, or whichever PAS unit you are using, and this will fill filter any of the air coming into the house and help to maintain a more balance house pressure while still cleaning all the air in the house. And because this small amount of outside air is being introduced prior to the HVAC unit. all of it will be both filtered and heated or cooled.

Air Filtration For 3D Printing

The use of 3D Printers has grown 1000 % over the past few years. Many schools, businesses, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and individuals now own a 3D Printer. The majority of the printers used in the schools and homes are the smaller FFF or FDM filament style printers that print with various types of plastic or composites. These printers can print over 30 different materials and their tool head nozzles can reach temperatures at or above 300 degrees celsius ( 580 F ). When melting these materials during the printing operation, small amounts of sub-micron particulate are produced which depending upon the materials used for printing may create some health issues when inhaled by the user. Air filtration for 3D printing is now becoming a major concern.

There is a long history of issues with much of manufacturing moving out of the US. For the most part a lot of the reasons were high  labor costs and corporate greed. In many cases the Asian markets had developed more companies that did injection molding and machining processes that were considerably less expensive with the ability to change product parts almost over night.

Air Filtration

For those people who live and work in colder climates, the amount of time you spend indoors is proportionally more than those individuals who live in warmer climates. In addition colder air is much drier than warm moist air and as a result dust particles and other airborne contaminants tend to stay suspended in air for much longer periods of time.

As humans we inhale large quantities of air every time we take a breath. All of that air is filtered through our mucus membranes and lung linings and a large portion of the particulate are ( those particles larger than 20 microns ) air filtered out and most often projected out of the body when exhaling.

The smaller particles, those under 20 microns and especially those sub-micron particles, are trapped in the lung linings and not exhaled. They are absorbed by the body and then flushed out of the body. HEPA Filtration Systems As Air Booster

Using HEPA filtration systems as air moving boosters is fairly common and in most cases necessary. If you have a multiple number of pick up points from which you want to remove contaminated air you need to understand the concept of air flow resistance or pressure drop.

When moving air through any type of duct system you have to take into consideration the resistance of air flow through the duct especially if it is flexible duct and you have some 45 degree and 90 degree bends. Air flow resistance is measured in inches and the higher the number the greater the resistance the larger the horsepower has to be on the motor/blower system that is moving that air from one point to another.

If you have any type of air filtration device in the air flow system that being used to remove the contaminants you also have to take into account the static pressure loss across that filter as well. If it is a HEPA filter you have a significant pressure drop which needs to be added into the total line loss when designing the blower/motor system.

Pure Air Systems has been making fan powered HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. They use variable speed drive ECM motors on all their systems that adjust automatically by speeding up as the pressure drop across the HEPA filter increases.

Comprehensive Coverage

When purchasing insurance for home or auto you often look at the section marked “Comprehensive Coverage.” This tells you what is covered under the policy with the price quoted to you. This can include covering medical costs, with certain dollar limits, uninsured motorist, which is good to have and a number of other conditions. It does not, however, cover acts of God, which include Aliens crashing their space craft into your car or large creatures eating your seats while you are parked outside your favorite restaurant. Obsession

Having been an owner of a company that produced actual hard technologies and not just a service or digital technology process I have been obsessed with finding a way to help people understand the value of making something of value and making a living at it.

Pure Air Systems was started in 1985 with one air filtration system in our product line. We had adapted a commercial HEPA filtration system that was used in the Asbestos Abatement Industry to work with any ducted HVAC system be it residential or commercial. In addition we modified it to work as a stand-alone unit for any application requiring the reduction or removal of sub-micron airborne contaminants.

The acceptance of the product by consumers and commercial operations was gratifying but we soon realized that our original model 600H unit ( producing 600 CFM of HEPA filtered air) was not adequate for many of the commercial customers applications.

To resolve this issue we decided to bring two new HEPA filter systems into the product mix. One rated at 1200 CFM and the largest rated at 2,000 CFM. We were able to adapt the same size blower and housing for both air flows by simply adding a 3/4 HP motor to the 1200 HS unit and a 1 HP motor to the 2000HS unit. In this way customers could actually increase the capacity of their 1200HS ( should they need it ) to 2000 CFM. This was both cost effective and made it easier in the manufacturing end.

The other issue presented to us was the configuration of the filter housing itself. We had originally designed the units so they were built in two sections that were symmetrical giving us the ability to orient the inlet and discharge of the units to adapt to any type of HVAC system. We then added another modification to allow for any of our systems to have either a straight through air flow from end to end or a top inlet and side discharge. These housings could even by changed in the field should the customer realize one orientation was better than the other.

Being obsessed with making the systems customer friendly was always my goal. Pure Air Systems is now 31 years old and the obsession with maintaining high performance HEPA based air filtration systems is still a priority.

HEPA Filters

HEPA media was created in Los Alamos, New Mexico specifically to remove or reduce the alpha particles that were produced in the development of atomic fission.
