Carbon Filters For Removal of Odors and Gaseous Pollutants

The removal of airborne odors and gaseous pollutants is a totally different technology than the removal of airborne particulate. To capture gaseous odors and pollutants requires some form of material or compound that can capture the gaesous molecules and hold them in place. The most commen type of material used for this type of process is carbon which is activated charcoal placed in a web-like enclosure. This material is created under high tempertures and has a very high surface area with lots of openings that can capture gaseous pollutants up to ten times its own weight.

The term used for capturing gases and odors with carbon and other materials is the “adsorbtive process” This is different than the term “absorb” which is used with sponge-like materials. Carbon has a great affinity to capture and hold the majority of organic and inorganic gases and will hold them until the carbon becomes saturated at which time the carbon needs to bed replaced. Frequency of change is dependent upon the amount of odor producing gas and the volume of air ( in CFM ) that you are cleaning.

Granular carbon media can be packaged in many ways. For water filtration the carbon media is placed in a porous bag or fine screen enclosure. For use in airborne processes it can be placed in a cardboard frame with fine screening material or infused in a  filter media type substrate an placed accordian style in a frame sized to fit into any opening. These carbon filters can be placed in the return air of HVAC ductwork and used in conjunction with air filters.

Pure Air Systems manufactures a complete line of fan-powered air filtration systems that can include HEPA and Carbon media filters or all Carbon media for applications where just gases and odors need to be removed. In all cases a prefiter is always placed in front of the carbon or HEPA filter fo keep the secondary filters clean.

Wiring Harness

The problem with any new product development that requires electrical wiring is the design and construction of the wiring harness. The part of the product that carries electricity from the power source to the various working components and allows for product execution by the customer or user of the device. While digital controls, chips and control boards all have their parts to play in the operation of the product electrical wire with connectors and connector boards are still an essential part of the product.

One of the challenges with designing any piece of equipment is the dual challenges of keeping the design simple for assembly as well as for maintenance. This is easier said than done as one often looks only at the fabrication process and forgets the customers have to disassemble the unit for maintenance and repair.  Wiring is an issue as you need to make sure you use push on connectors rather than soldered or snap in connections should the customer have to move or remove a piece of the system for repair.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing fan powered, commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. The design of the systems has changed over the years and while more digital components are now used, basic electrical wiring is still part of the overall operational design. The use of the variable speed drive ECM motors required more digital speed controllers and boards than before. However, the need for small 24 volt transformers also  required wiring from the transformers to the boards and to the inlet power cord.  Again, design of the harness was crucial to the overall assembly and operation of the unit.

It never ceases to amaze me how something as small as a screw or connector or the correct length of a piece of wire can totally alter the design of a component. If a capture device can not be used because of access to it with a tool during assembly then the capture device ( screw ) will have to be replaced with something else. And, that something else needs to have the same strength to secure the component as the previous screw. Small things make a big difference.

In re-designing the HPS portable unit for the new APPAIS Class II Medical Device, the wiring harness had to be significantly modified to allow for the rotation of the EBM blower/motor 180 degrees and a shift of one inch to the right. This change made the current harness too long and difficult to work with when the blower/motor was installed in its proper position.  This change to the wiring harness was small compared to the major re-design of the housing. That discussion is for another blog.

Now That The Elections Are Over

The last Presidential election ( and other state and local elections ) was perhaps the most invasive in terms of using every possible avenue to get your attention, it proved one thing.  We hated and loved every minute of it.

We all have a certain aversion to advertising, especially on TV. That is why I, like many people, use their DVR or TiVo devices to record their favorite programs so we can blast through the commercials. It really was a blessing during the elections. I’m sure that companies that pay to advertise on TV hate that fact but they also know getting information into the hands of the consumer using Television as one of their marketing schemes is critical to their  business model. But is it really?

Running for President during his first term, President Obama used the internet very effectively to get his ideas out to the masses. It turned out to be a very successful strategy. During this past Presidential election both parties utilized the internet in every possible way to get their points across to the potential voters. They not only used social media to gain attention but to get donations for their specific Congressmen, Senators and other local political officials.  It was, in my mind, the beginning of the end for traditional advertising as we know it.

For all those nay sayers that find Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogging to be a passing phase….think again. Social media is becoming the 6,000 lb Gorilla in the room. For many of the over 60 generation the use of computers may be a partial process for getting email and Skyping with their Grand Children…but for those under 45, Social Media and all its parts are THE way to connect. I should also include the next biggest method of communication…Texting. Even I find myself texting a message to someone rather than calling. It is faster, more convenient and has no time limitation. Plus, if the individual I am trying to call is busy or away from his or her cell phone, the text message will still be there. And…most people respond quickly to a text message  as opposed to waiting to call you back when they have time to do it.

There are some many advantages to using Social Media, the internet, tablets, etc..etc..etc. I can send you documents, photos, maps, directions, via my cell phone. We can work on the same document and project in the Cloud from anywhere at anytime. I can send you a link to a subject or issue I think is important and  Skype or Facetime with you from anywhere on the planet ( mostly) using any hand held device. I can also get nine other friends or business associates on the same conference call with a push of a button.

Pure Air Systems started its operations in 1985. While it used computers early on for correspondence and record keeping it didn’t enter the digital age until 1995 with its original and current website URL. Shortly thereafter PAS started putting its information on a website ( which has now been modified 8 times) and today over 65% of all our new business comes from the internet. The power of digital communications can not be denied. It is the new direction for all things sold and communicated. Get with the program because this process is here to stay.

There Is No Box

For the past 20 years or so the term “thinking outside the box” has become ubiquitous in the meeting rooms of most corporations, small businesses, schools and universities. Most of the time it refers to thinking differently or looking at a problem from a totally different angle or point of view. Like many terms that have a unique beginning and meaning but through over use become less relevant, like “paradigm shift,” thinking outside the box is quickly following that path.

The question then is what is the next step in thought process beyond “outside the box?” The title of this blog would indicate  that we eliminate the box altogether. If that is the case then what do we call this new form of thought process if there is no box? How about “augmented reality” or “augmented thinking?”  Does it matter? How about just listening to your customers and providing the type of products and services they want and need?

If you look at the list of companies that are still in business after 25 years you realize they have done something right to be around that long. Consistently performing up to and often exceeding customers needs would be one really important part of this “longevity” equation. After all, it is difficult to be in business long term without having repeat business and a constant stream of new business. It isn’t luck….its listening.

Today, your customers have a multitude of methods of providing you feedback on your products and service. All too often we get caught up in our own success and forget that the reason for the constant stream of customers is our ability to get it right 99% of the time. When we take that for granted everyone loses. With the tremendous impact of “social media” in our society, there is no reason you should not have a pulse on the buying tendencies of your target market. You mess up they will tell you and 500 of their closest friends. Of course, when you get it right….the message is also relayed to their followers. Instantly.

Pure Air Systems has been in business since 1985. For over 26 years it has been providing some of the highest quality, best performing HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems in the world. The PAS systems use the most advanced digitally controlled, ECM motor systems available along with commercial grade, certified HEPA filters and carbon media housed in heavy gauge, powder coated steel enclosures.

In 1995 Pure Air Systems developed its first website. Shortly thereafter an email system was introduced and then eventually a Facebook and Twitter account along with this blog were added. Customers have the ability to ask specific questions about their individual IAQ problems and convey their feedback on any aspect of the PAS products or their performance, using any of the aforementioned social media programs.

Customers will tell you what they need and expect from your company. You need to have a process in place to evaluate their current needs and ascertain if you can meet them or need to modify, change or alter your current product and service programs to accommodate their current and future needs. Pure Air Systems does.

Willie Make It…Betty Won’t

“Play on words” has been a popular tool of writers and journalists since newspapers were in print. The title of this blog, for example, is taken from some family get together’s when I was a young man. It seems there were a lot of what I call “goofy” phrases used in the early 50’s. This title is one of them. Maybe you have seen it before ….or heard it used. In either case use of this type of phrasing is a great way to get attention from readers.

In today’s world the vast majority of people get all their information, books, classes and social interaction online. The ability to capture your attention has never been more demanding. Getting someone to read something  for more than 8 seconds is now considered a real coup…and if you can get them to read your entire article, blog or product description you are in rare company.

Telling stories and providing helpful, insightful information seems to be one way to get people to view your material. It is for this reason that many companies now incorporate blogs into their websites, like this one, to provide updated and topical data to the market.

Pure Air Systems has published over 150 blogs in the past two years. Over time the number of people reading the blogs has increased dramatically. But most importantly the blogs provide topical information as well as directing potential customers to our website. This is important as all of the technical and operational information about our HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems are found there. Whether you are a contractor, end user or engineer, the data you need is located on the website.

In addition to the blogs, a special section on our website is designed to provide general information on all aspects of air filtration, indoor air quality, heating/cooling systems and ventilation. We call it “Pure Air University.”  We believe it is important to offer some basic knowledge on all things IAQ so that the public has the ability to make an informed decision when selecting an air filtration system. The information provided through this section is not designed to sell but rather designed to tell.

After being in business for over 25 years, you learn a lot about what information is important to potential customers. They have seen the hyped marketing materials from many of the companies that sell air filtration or air purifier systems. Many of those companies that sold “gimmick” based technology are no longer in business. It seems no matter what you say or how you say it…performance is the only viable marketing tool. We know this and that is why we are still here. Our systems perform as promised…period. No play on words needed.

Your Health – Your Choice

From the TV to the newspapers, magazines, online media, Facebook, etc. etc., you are constantly besieged with warnings and comments about how to best take care of your body to ensure a long healthy life. We all know the dangers of cigarette smoke, lack of exercise and eating all the wrong  foods, but we never think much about the air we breathe.

In many parts of the US when the weather conditions are right, you might have an “ozone” alert and are warned to stay inside or minimize your outside activities and reduce your driving if at all possible. In the summer months these “nozone” periods may last a few days to weeks at a time. The levels of both ozone and suspended particles can be extremely high on these days and breathing in large amounts of these pollutants can even affect  healthy people.  While staying indoors can help….it is not the total solution.

You have heard the comments about indoor pollution being worse than outdoor pollution a hundred times from air filtration manufacturers and home builders alike. In essence, this is true. The tighter home and building construction designed to help conserve energy use for heating and cooling has also created a tighter living and working environment. It has also reduced the amount of fresh air circulating in the house or building.

For over 25 years Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based, fan powered, commercial grade air filtration systems that can really help you improve your indoor environment. The HS series of PAS filtration systems are designed so they can either be attached to the return air side of any HVAC system or used as stand-alone units. In either installation configuration the HEPA systems can not only filter all the air in your home 48 times a day but also introduce outside, filtered fresh air. This dual-style capability is unique to the PAS line of air filtration products.

HEPA filters are the only true way to consistently remove the small, sub-micron particles that can be harmful when ingested into your lungs. Over time even small concentrations of harmful airborne particles can create significant health issues. The longer we live in our increasingly polluted environment the more doctors and scientists are convinced environmental factors are major contributors to a wide range of chronic diseases.

Young children are especially susceptible to lung damage at early ages as their lungs are not fully developed until after 10 years of age. Maintaining a relatively clean environment for children and also older adults with reduced lung capacity is critical. With medical costs sky rocketing , preventative health practices are essential today for minimizing unnecessary medical expenses.

Pure Air Systems has systems installed in thousands of homes, offices, commercial operations, medical facilities and major pharmaceutical operations across the US and around the world. For more information on our complete product line please go to our website at: or like us on Facebook at;

Phone Books Are Going The Way Of The Dodo Bird!

Many libraries, businesses, schools, medical facilities and even homes no longer rely on the ubiquitous phone book ( white or yellow pages) to get phone numbers and addresses for individuals or businesses. The old yellow pages  line that said ” let your fingers do the walking” has been changed to “let your fingers do the typing.” The use of the computer or digital device has replaced, for the most part, the phone book. Soon, like the Dodo bird, the telephone book, as we know it, will become extinct.

While there is still a portion of the population that either refuses to become computer literate or just can’t figure out how to make anything more complicated than a standard phone work, the vast majority of people use digital devices to not only find individuals and businesses but also to save or “archive” this information for future reference. All with the touch of  a few keys or buttons on your iPhone.

Not only can you find information faster, but you can access rating information on that specific product or service in an instant from a number of respected sources. You can’t do that with a phone book. This is why most companies today put more money, time and serious effort in developing a website and e-mail addresses to provide for a connection to their business from anyone anywhere around the world in less than 2 seconds. You can’t do that with a phone book. Oh yeah….and you can contact the business from your computer and ask them to give you a price or answer more questions about their product or service….without having to call them.

As I mentioned earlier, companies that use their websites as their primary method of marketing their products or services put a lot of time and money into developing a site that is informative, educational, detail specific, includes typical applications and even allows you to purchase their products on line.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing and marketing its line of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. It was one of the first air filter companies to build a website in the early 90’s when .com was not even a term. Over the years PAS has modified, changed, altered and improved its web site to include a lot of useful information including typical applications, specific references showing how other companies utilize the systems and Pure Air University, a section dedicated to inform you on how filtration and carbon adsorption actually works.

You can even order replacement filters and some of the smaller systems online. And of course, there is a section that allows you to send questions directly to the PAS staff so that your specific problem or application can be addressed. Soylent Green Is People!

Remember when Charlton Heston was being carted away on a stretcher in the movie Solylent Green and he shouted out these words? The world’s food shortage was at crisis levels and plankton from the sea was being made into a food substitute called soylent. They had soylent red, blue, yellow and green. Everyone assumed that since this was the only food source available ( and they could afford) that they believed this was good enough to sustain their lives. And since everyone was eating it, it had to be okay…..and soylent green was the best tasting. Hmmm..wonder why?

I also wonder what would happen if everyone found out that soylent green…the best tasting soylent…was made from their fellow man?  Would they still buy it? Would they convince themselves that food was more precious and after all people die every day? After all if enough people believe it is okay…why concern yourself about it.

Today, with over 7 billion people on this planet, the ability to produce enough food to feed the growing population is of some concern to a lot of countries.  And, along with food shortages, the quality  and availability of  water and  quality of the air is also in jeopardy. It’s funny how we take clean water and air for granted. Even with newer technologies and stricter environmental laws being put in place we seem to be on the short side of a losing battle.

It’s interesting to note, that many people will go through the expense of either buying bottled water or putting in a water treatment unit in their homes to ensure they are getting pure, non-contaminated drinking water. Using bottled water or a filtration system will remove odors and some tastes associated with chemicals used to treat the water…and so they associate good taste with better water. However, when it comes to the air they breathe, if they can’t smell or taste anything in the air then it is okay. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

Much of the air we breathe in homes, offices, shopping malls and in urban areas has a much higher level of suspended sub-micron sized airborne particulate than we believe. And, unlike tainted water or spoiled food which we can immediately react to, high concentrations of airborne particulate in the air we breathe is never noticed. And, since everyone around us is not falling over dead from breathing the same air….it’s entirely okay.

Over time, breathing in large concentrations of harmful airborne contaminants can cause any number of respiratory or allergic dysfunctions. And, even breathing in low concentrations of certain airborne chemicals and gases can be deadly. Of course then you could become part of the food chain maybe end up as soylent green.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing a line of commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems since 1985. These systems are designed to remove up to 99.99% of all airborne particulate that is 0.3 microns or larger and approaches the same efficiency with smaller particles. These systems are perfectly suited for homes, offices, commercial buildings and industrial and institutional operations. You Can Run But You Can’t Hide

The advent of the cell phone with both photo and video capability has made it almost impossible to hide anything from anybody. Now with the introduction of the new iPhone4 with one of the two cameras on the front of the phone you can now play “Dick Tracy” for real. Imagine, walking along talking and having a video discussion with your family, friends and co-workers from anywhere at anytime. Nothing will be left to the imagination. Nothing.

For all the complaining about people trying to maintain some privacy it seems we are all now truly living in a “glass world” so to speak. No matter where you go…..there they are!

For asthma and allergy sufferers and individuals who react to certain chemicals in the air, it is the same issue. No matter where they go…there they are!

For chemically sensitive individuals the issues are more complicated. Driving in a car, riding in a subway, taking a bus, flying in an airplane; all these transportation methods can be detrimental to the chemically sensitive individual. All of the man made materials that are used in the production of plastic components, seats, carpeting, wall coverings and carpets can produce chemicals that create significant health problems for these individuals. Other than trying to minimize the amount of time they spend in these confined chemical soups, these individuals have few options.

It is the same issue for people who suffer from airborne allergens, pollen, ragweed, etc. Most modes of transportation have little or no air filtration devices in their heating/cooling systems.  When confined in a small space with outside air being introduced into moving vehicles the allergy sufferer is now being bombarded with a high concentration of airborne particulate not only from the outside fresh air but from the clothing of the other passengers in the vehicle.

As the title states, “You can run but you can’t hide” from the world we live in. However, you do have the ability to control the amount of chemicals and particulate you breathe in your own home. Pure Air Systems has been making HEPA and Carbon based whole-house air filtration systems since 1985 and offers a complete line of commercial grade systems to meet your every need.

For Architectural and Engineering Firms Pure Air Systems Has The “Right Stuff”

Ever since the movie the “Right Stuff” came out, the use of the term Right Stuff has come to symbolize the best of the best for both men and women. And it has been used to identify a product or process that continues to be a leader in performance and reliability.

Pure Air Systems manufactures a line of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems and has been doing this since 1985.  From the initial design the goal was to build the best possible air filtration system using tested and proven commercial grade components and then offer the systems to the residential as well as the commercial market.

Over the past 25 years the PAS systems have become known as the best high performance HEPA based air filtration systems on the market. The addition of the ECM digitally controlled, 120/240v 50/60Hz motors to the systems allowed the units to be used not only in more commercial applications but also anywhere in the world.

The systems are designed so that they can be used in multiple configurations, applications and processes. The PAS units can be used either attached to an existing HVAC or air handler unit or as stand alone systems. And the ECM motors allow for finite speed control from 10% of volume to 100% of volume in 1% increments. This finite speed control allows the systems ( which range in maximum volume from 600 CFM to 200 CFM) to be adapted to almost any application requiring both true certified HEPA filtration or Carbon adsorption systems with exacting air flow control over pressure drop.

For Architectural & Engineering firms the PAS line offers a unique product that the engineers can adapt to applications requiring this type of filtration, power, performance and reliability. And, because the systems use motors that have a universal electrical rating, these systems can be installed anywhere in the world. This is a huge advantage for  A&E firms as they no longer have to ask the supplier to modify or change the product to meet an overseas or commercial electrical requirement.

The PAS units are all fabricated from high strength steel and powder coated painted. This allows for use in any environment and many of the PAS systems that were sold in the last twenty years are still in operation. A true testament to the design and fabrication of these systems.

So, for A&E firms looking for the “right stuff” all they have to do is go to our website at: and they will be able to obtain all the information they need to select the right system for their application.
