The WW II generation is almost gone from this planet and the Vietnam era baby boomers are now retiring. The WW II generation was mostly responsible for the age of manufacturing in the US and the baby boomers brought the age of technology to the world. For the most part, manufacturing has been transferred to other countries and technology in all its forms is now the booming industry in America. Throw in the new age of AI and you begin to see an emergence of the new America. 

With the ability for many young people to make a living using digital technology, whether from an office of their home, there is little incentive to get into the trades or any type of manual labor, including the service sector. As a result, you are seeing a major shift from the older, more traditional work for a company for 40 years to work for 20 companies for 40 years, including working for themselves.

This shift is creating employment challenges for retail, the service sector and the trades. It is, in fact, the reason you are seeing so many restaurants go out of business and many retail store chains are either consolidating or shutting down, to the chagrin of the older generation. This transition has not yet hit its stride. By 2030, the industrial revolution as we know it will be replaced by Robotics, AI, Additive Manufacturing, working from home and a shift to fewer or no children in marriages.

For many years carbon media or expanded carbon, has been used for the reduction and removal of organic and inorganic gaseous pollutants. Expanded carbon or charcoal is produced using heat under high pressure that creates a surface area that has thousands of tiny openings that are capable of adsorbing gaseous molecules much higher in weight than the carbon itself. 

While carbon granules are often used in liquid filtration, the most common use is in air filtration whether in a stand alone filter or fan powered air filtration system. Carbon media filters have a fair amount of resistance and are therefore more often used in conjunction with a fan powered unit. 

Even though the expanded carbon has a high adsorption rate to weight of the carbon media, it will, over time, load up and stop adsorbing the odors or gases. Replacement cycles can be as long as once every 6 months to once every 6 weeks depending upon the severity of the gaseous pollutant.

The removal of gaseous pollutants ( odors ) is often accomplished by using a masking agent sprayed into the room or area with the odor. If the odor is temporary or infrequent then the aerosol spray deodorizers will usually meet the task. If, however, the odor is from a continuous source and is strong enough or dangerous to breathe then commercial grade carbon media filters will be required.

The use of expanded carbon ( charcoal) for the reduction/removal of airborne gaseous pollutants has been around for over 100 years. These carbon media packs ( usually 1 inch to 4 inches in depth) can be very effective at removing these strong, continuous odors and the carbon can be combined with other materials to catalyze some pollutants that are not removed by just carbon alone.

Looking forpward to 2022 which is beginning to look at lot like 2021 …..again! It seems moving forward is much harder than it used to be. The removal of airborne odors and gaseous pollutants is a totally different technology than the removal of airborne particulate. To capture gaseous odors and pollutants requires some form of material or compound that can capture the gaesous molecules and hold them in place. The most commen type of material used for this type of process is carbon which is activated charcoal placed in a web-like enclosure. This material is created under high tempertures and has a very high surface area with lots of openings that can capture gaseous pollutants up to ten times its own weight. 

The term used for capturing gases and odors with carbon and other materials is the “adsorbtive process” This is different than the term “absorb” which is used with sponge-like materials. Carbon has a great affinity to capture and hold the majority of organic and inorganic gases and will hold them until the carbon becomes saturated at which time the carbon needs to bed replaced. Frequency of change is dependent upon the amount of odor producing gas and the volume of air ( in CFM ) that you are cleaning. 

Granular carbon media can be packaged in many ways. For water filtration the carbon media is placed in a porous bag or fine screen enclosure. For use in airborne processes it can be placed in a cardboard frame with fine screening material or infused in a  filter media type substrate an placed accordian style in a frame sized to fit into any opening. These carbon filters can be placed in the return air of HVAC ductwork and used in conjunction with air filters.

The problem with any new product development that requires electrical wiring is the design and construction of the wiring harness. The part of the product that carries electricity from the power source to the various working components and allows for product execution by the customer or user of the device. While digital controls, chips and control boards all have their parts to play in the operation of the product electrical wire with connectors and connector boards are still an essential part of the product.

One of the challenges with designing any piece of equipment is the dual challenges of keeping the design simple for assembly as well as for maintenance. This is easier said than done as one often looks only at the fabrication process and forgets the customers have to disassemble the unit for maintenance and repair.  Wiring is an issue as you need to make sure you use push on connectors rather than soldered or snap in connections should the customer have to move or remove a piece of the system for repair.

The design of the systems has changed over the years and while more digital components are now used, basic electrical wiring is still part of the overall operational design. The use of the variable speed drive ECM motors required more digital speed controllers and boards than before. However, the need for small 24 volt transformers also  required wiring from the transformers to the boards and to the inlet power cord.  Again, design of the harness was crucial to the overall assembly and operation of the unit.

It never ceases to amaze me how something as small as a screw or connector or the correct length of a piece of wire can totally alter the design of a component. If a capture device can not be used because of access to it with a tool during assembly then the capture device ( screw ) will have to be replaced with something else. And, that something else needs to have the same strength to secure the component as the previous screw. Small things make a big difference.

In re-designing the HPS portable unit for the new APPAIS Class II Medical Device, the wiring harness had to be significantly modified to allow for the rotation of the EBM blower/motor 180 degrees and a shift of one inch to the right. This change made the current harness too long and difficult to work with when the blower/motor was installed in its proper position.  This change to the wiring harness was small compared to the major re-design of the housing. The last Presidential election ( and other state and local elections ) was perhaps the most invasive in terms of using every possible avenue to get your attention, it proved one thing.  We hated and loved every minute of it.

We all have a certain aversion to advertising, especially on TV. That is why I, like many people, use their DVR or TiVo devices to record their favorite programs so we can blast through the commercials. It really was a blessing during the elections. I’m sure that companies that pay to advertise on TV hate that fact but they also know getting information into the hands of the consumer using Television as one of their marketing schemes is critical to their  business model. But is it really?

Running for President during his first term, President Obama used the internet very effectively to get his ideas out to the masses. It turned out to be a very successful strategy. During this past Presidential election both parties utilized the internet in every possible way to get their points across to the potential voters. They not only used social media to gain attention but to get donations for their specific Congressmen, Senators and other local political officials.  It was, in my mind, the beginning of the end for traditional advertising as we know it.

For all those nay sayers that find Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogging to be a passing phase….think again. Social media is becoming the 6,000 lb Gorilla in the room. For many of the over 60 generation the use of computers may be a partial process for getting email and Skyping with their Grand Children…but for those under 45, Social Media and all its parts are THE way to connect. I should also include the next biggest method of communication…Texting. Even I find myself texting a message to someone rather than calling. It is faster, more convenient and has no time limitation. Plus, if the individual I am trying to call is busy or away from his or her cell phone, the text message will still be there. And…most people respond quickly to a text message  as opposed to waiting to call you back when they have time to do it.

There are some many advantages to using Social Media, the internet, tablets, etc..etc..etc. I can send you documents, photos, maps, directions, via my cell phone. We can work on the same document and project in the Cloud from anywhere at anytime. I can send you a link to a subject or issue I think is important and  Skype or Facetime with you from anywhere on the planet ( mostly) using any hand held device. I can also get nine other friends or business associates on the same conference call with a push of a button.

For the past 20 years or so the term “thinking outside the box” has become ubiquitous in the meeting rooms of most corporations, small businesses, schools and universities. Most of the time it refers to thinking differently or looking at a problem from a totally different angle or point of view. “Play on words” has been a popular tool of writers and journalists since newspapers were in print. The title of this blog, for example, is taken from some family get together’s when I was a young man. It seems there were a lot of what I call “goofy” phrases used in the early 50’s.
