Made In America At Any Price

The Presidential candidates talk about it, the news media constantly harps on it, the American public complains about it, companies tell you about it…but does anyone really, really care about it? You know what I am talking about…the made in America issue. With people believing everything is made in China it seems as though there is nothing we need that isn’t made someplace else. Not true, not true.

Pure Air Systems was founded in 1985 in the US and is still in operation today. Based in Indianapolis Indiana, ( and you can’t get more American than that), PAS is now going on its 28th year of operation as a US manufacturing operation. Pure Air Systems makes a complete line of commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems that are used in the residential, commercial, institutional, medical and industrial markets both here and around the world. Each PAS product proudly displays the Made In America label because we believe people want to buy the best American products. However, that is not always the case.

For all that fervor and gnashing of teeth about buying foreign made products, the hard, cold truth is that many people will shop on price only. They may consider buying a US made product but if they can’t find what they are looking for or find that the US made product ( which in many ways may be identical) and foreign made products are similar in design and function, but the US made product is more expensive. This is probably true as the cost to produce products in the US is higher because labor costs and other infrastructure costs are higher.

In some cases, however, the US made product may have a major advantage over the foreign competition as the domestic product may be designed and fabricated from materials that are far superior than their foreign counter parts. PAS products are exactly that. Far superior in both design, fabrication techniques, component parts and performance than almost all other HEPA based air filtration systems on the market today..from anywhere. The PAS units are all fabricated from 16 and 20 gauge powder coated steel and all the component parts are commercial grade, state-0f-the-art designs. With almost 28 years of operational experience and thousands of units in the field…some as old as 25 years..Pure Air Systems has a proven track record for providing the best, most long lasting, high performance HEPA air filtration systems in the world.

The PAS line of HEPA systems is priced in the commercial range because this is the only product base they manufacture. There is no residential grade unit. The HEPA systems used in a clean room environment is the same unit you use in your home. There is no difference. Are they more expensive than the cheaply made, plastic air purifiers available at Walmart and Home Depot? Absolutely. Do they do the same thing…absolutely NOT!

The Gnome

A garden gnome or lawn gnome is a figurine of a small humanoid creature, usually wearing a pointy hat, produced for the purpose of ornamentation and protection from evil sorcery. Typically found in gardens and on lawns, these figurines originated in early 19th century Germany where they commonly became known as garden dwarfs. While these are still very popular in Europe you often still see these gnomes popping up in gardens and some lawns across the US. The gnome has become one of the marketing tools for Travelocity…which are depicted on their website and often shown on the TV advertisements.

It is interesting that even in this day and age of unbelievable new technologies, many people still believe that certain objects or potions will protect them and their families from harm. Perhaps the stories and superstitions that surround these objects adds to the mystique that there are powers beyond our own comprehension at work. However, for most of us this is just nonsense. Or is it?

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems for over 28 years. For the vast majority of those individuals, companies and organizations that have used these highly regarded systems, the overall effectiveness of the systems has convinced them they made the correct decision. However, for individuals who suffer from allergies or airborne contaminants and for those companies and facilities that still believe in home made remedies, the use of any type of air filtration device seems ridiculous. After all, they don’t need any any expensive equipment to do what their DIY concoctions can do.

Wearing a clove of garlic or magic stone or magnets from India around your neck thinking these items will ward off evil spirits and keep you safe from harm has never been proven to be effective. The reality is the ability to really protect yourself and your loved ones from harm requires a more grounded process. For years, Pure Air Systems dealt with potential customers who had tried every type of remedy and inexpensive air purification device to help them with their allergies and airborne contaminant removal. In every case where that type of customer acquiesced to purchasing one of the PAS HEPA units, their problems were resolved. By process of elimination, they proved to themselves that science was better than numerology.

This same trial-and-error process was also repeated by commercial companies, medical facilities and institutions. Often they would use the “lower bidder” approach to resolving their airborne contaminant issues only to find that in the world of air pollution, price should never be  the deciding factor. Pure Air Systems has maintained its reputation for providing the most effective, reliable HEPA based air filtration systems on the market today by doing exactly what it says it can do. Remove the harmful, airborne particles, allergens and pathogens from any source with a very high degree of effectiveness. Without using any Gnomes.

Kids Without iPads

It’s a sad state of affairs when you see a group of pre-teen boys and girls mulling around with that sad look on their faces due to the fact that their parents won’t buy them an iPad. After all, being connected today is not a physical process but a virtual process. If you are not on Facebook or don’t have a Twitter account, or worse yet can’t Skype or Face Time with your friends who are you….really! Fear of being unconnected is more important today than not  having close personal friends.  It seems that having something that everyone else believes is essential to their existence as a human being is the next “Holy Grail.”

There is always push-back from a certain segment of the market when some new technology comes onto the scene and becomes ubiquitous overnight. Facebook, twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn have all made major in-roads in getting people to connect digitally and become part of their everyday lifestyle. But, regardless of what you think of social media, it has become a very important tool for organizations, businesses and associations, not to mention the millions of citizens on this planet that use it hourly if not daily.

Pure Air Systems was started in 1985, 10 years before the internet even started to become an alternate method of sharing information with the masses. In the early 1990’s email was becoming the in thing and it was evident that having a way to connect with potential customers outside the Midwest ( PAS is located in Indianapolis) was important in two ways. First, trying to locate potential customers in those days required more of a word of mouth and the use of hundreds of dollars a month in postage sending out literature to prospective clients. Second, there was no way to effectively connect with end users who had a need for a true HEPA based air filtration system.

In 1994 Pure Air Systems initiated www.pureairsystems.com. At that time only major corporations were putting a URL on the internet. Dial-up was the only connection option and Windows was the only true browser. The first  website for PAS was simply a landing page that was incorporated in a business forum that had hundreds of other URL’s listed as well. By 1995 PAS began to work with a small company that could develop a website design and the first of many PAS websites was born. Having a website also provided a mechanism for connecting with anyone who knew how to “surf the net” and it also provided another email address.

Today, Pure Air Systems has a very large website that incorporates all the data on their systems as well as video components and an online store for replacement filters. In addition, PAS has a Facebook page, Twitter account and an active blog site…of which this is one. In 1995 less than 4% of their new business was generated from the internet. In 2012 over 65% of their new business comes from the web….and their products are now sold around the world.

Calculating Air Exchange Rates For HEPA Filter Systems

When discussing the size or amount of CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air flow required from one of our HEPA systems to effectively remove or reduce the levels of airborne particulate it is good to know a few basic rules of thumb when determining the right size, quantity and location of the HEPA systems. The math is really simple.

You need to determine the area of the room in cubic feet, so you first need to  measure the length and width of the room. Let’s say it is 15 feet long and 20 feet wide. Multiply 15 x 20 and you get 300 square feet. Now multiply that number ( 300 ) times the height of the room. We will make in 1o feet high. So you multiply 10 x 300 and you get 3,000 cubic feet. This is all it takes to determine the area of the room.

Depending upon the type of application and particulate loading and size range of the airborne particulate you will require a certain number of air changes per hour to accomplish your goal of air contaminant removal. In the case of a clean room type requirement, those are usually designated by Class. Such as Class 100,000, 10,000, 100, 10 and 1. These are rated as .3 microns per cubic foot. As an example a class 10,000 clean room environment would need to meet the criteria of nothing over 10,000 particles per cubic foot at .3 microns or smaller.  Considering the room without filtration could easily register 400,000 particles plus per cubic foot at .3 microns, this reduction level requirement is fairly significant.

Since not all applications require a clean room environment, however, even for residential and light commercial applications, a large reduction of particulates in the air is still necessary. So understanding some simple rules of thumb regarding air exchange rates is necessary. So now that you know the area of the room you need to figure out how many air changes per hour ( how many time you want all the air in the room to be cleaned) and this will bring you to the size  requirement of the air filtration system.

Effective removal of airborne particles is dependent upon two factors. A room in stasis or an active room. When a room is unoccupied or no equipment is running in a room the levels of particulate stay fairly constant. As an example we will take our 3,000 cubic foot room and say it is a small health clinic. During its normal daily operation it will most likely be occupied all of the time. People, clothing, equipment all generate sub-micron sized particles. If the room was seldom occupied probably  2 to 3 air changes per hour would suffice and maintain a relatively clean environment. Three air changes per hour would require a system that produces 150 CFM  or 9,000 cubic feet per hour. For a medical clinic that is occupied a minimum of 10 air changes per hour would a filtration system that produces 30,000 cubic feet per hour or 500 CFM.

By using these simple math formulas you can determine the amount of HEPA filtered air required for any size room. Remember, the higher the exchange rate the cleaner the air. Medical and high-tech manufacturing requirements will require higher exchange rates. Residential and light commercial or institutional may be lower. A Perfect Addition To Product Line

Most HVAC contractors concentrate on selling, installing and maintaining their line(s) of HVAC systems…be it residential or commercial. For most HVAC contractors the larger portion of their profits come from servicing the heating/cooling units and not the sale of the systems. This is especially true for contractors who do mostly new construction. As a result, HVAC contractors rely heavily on maintenance and accessories to boost their bottom line.

Since all HVAC contractors install some type of air filter or air filtration device along with the heating/cooling system, this product also provides a great addition to their line up as it needs to be replaced and/or cleaned on a regular basis. Filtration is a very important part of the total HVAC system. Without any filtration the dirt and dust from both inside and outside the building or structure would eventually clog up the cooling coils, fan, motor and other air flow sensitive equipment and stop the system from operating. Of course, the other main reason is to keep the indoor environment as clean and healthy as possible.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA and Carbon based fan powered, commercial grade air filtration systems since 1985. These systems are all designed to be either attached to an existing HVAC return air duct system or used as stand alone units. Since it inception, PAS has installed well over 10,000 of its model 600HS unit in homes across the US and Canada. Today, many of the larger homes and offices now use the PAS models 1200HS and 2000HS where larger HVAC systems are employed.

The PAS systems are recognized as providing the best air filtration in homes, offices and commercial operations than any other filtration system on the market today. For HVAC contractors, adding the PAS product line to their product line up. The overall flexibility of these units to be installed with almost any HVAC package in any building structure provides a great advantage for contractors looking for a multi-purpose air filtration system. In addition, these units can all be used to not only filter all the air in the specific indoor environment but also introduce small amounts of outside, filtered fresh air when the application calls for it.

One of the major advantages for HVAC contractors to offer the PAS units is the continued loyalty of their customers to the systems. Once the HEPA units are installed, the vast majority of the customers fall in love with the systems. Fewer allergies, colds and less dusting are primary benefits of the systems. This means the customers want to have the same contractor that installed them come back and service them along with their HVAC system. Over time PAS has found that many end users become more loyal to their air filtration systems than their heating/cooling units.

Go Configure

You see the advertisements on TV and in the newspapers all the time. A new power tool with 10 attachments that can cut, drill, sand, grind, stir paint, etc. A multi-purpose tool to cover any handyman’s need. It can even be adjusted for left hand or right hand operation.  Then there is the new Baby stroller that converts to a car seat or a booster chair in easy step. Multiple uses for similar devices are common and extremely efficient.

In 1985 Pure Air Systems was founded. It produced a single commercial grade HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration system that originally was designed for the commercial market. It was a single piece unit  with a 12″ diameter inlet ring and 10″ diameter outlet ring. Looking at the front of the unit ( two access doors) the discharge ring was on the left. This was the only configuration available at that time. In addition the unit incorporated a single speed, 1/3 HP induction motor, capacitor start.

Because the model 600H was being used in a partial by-pass concept attached to existing HVAC return air ducts, the original configuration prevented it from being used on HVAC systems where the installation of the 600H had to be used with a right hand discharge. This meant turning the unit completely around preventing any access to the top door where the prefilter, HEPA and Carbon media filters were housed.

To combat this problem the 600H unit was redesigned and split into two sections. The top and bottom were symmetrical so they could be rotated to give best inlet, discharge location as well as best access to the filter section. In addition, splitting the unit into two sections allowed for easier shipping by UPS of the systems.

As the demand for the system grew, so did the need to have a larger, more powerful unit to meet the needs of the commercial market. The need for larger systems coupled with a more efficient and effective electric drive system required some significant modifications. The 1200H and 2000H units were designed and built with similar configurations to the 600H. These units used larger motors but were also split into two sections to adapt more easily to any duct work or stand-alone use configuration.

The need for a unit to be a straight-through air flow device required the addition of a 600, 1200 and 2000 series unit with this straight through configuration. This allowed for multiple configurations of the same unit. The next and biggest change came in the use of the new ECM, digitally controlled motors. These new motors were rated at 120/240v, 50/60 Hz and could operate with a number of 24 volt input devices allowing for incremental air flow adjustments and the ability to be used anywhere in the world.

The addition of the new portable HPS350 and HPS500 units rounded out the product line which now makes Pure Air Systems one of the most complete lines of HEPA and Carbon based air filtration systems in the world. Any application, any configuration, any way you want to install the unit, the PAS systems will meet your requirements. Power, performance, reliability and conformity.

As We Relive Our Lives In What We Tell You

Living in Florida gives you a different perspective on how many of the seniors and active retirees see the world around them. For many of them the new, digitally driven lifestyles of the younger generation seem worlds apart from their storied histories. Some of these individuals had lead remarkable lives, many served in WWII and a large number were immigrants from all four corners of the world.

One of the things this older generation loves is the process of reliving their lives through the stories they tell you. For many of them this is very cathartic. You can see their eyes light up when they take you on one of their journey’s for perhaps the 20th time. There are times, however, when this living in the past process becomes more of an obsession than just a stroll down memory lane.

This same process of remembering the past as a better time often carries over to  how they feel about new technologies and different ways of doing things. There is no doubt that the world has changed dramatically and that advances in technology are difficult for those of us that live with it everyday let alone someone who still uses mail and the land line telephone as their primary communications protocol.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified HEPA based air filtration systems since 1985. The use of HEPA filters in the residential market was somewhat pioneered by PAS as previously most HEPA filters were used in the commercial and electronics industries. In 1985 few people outside the clean room or government really understood this technology yet it was fast becoming the filtration method of choice for reduction and removal of the small, respirable sized particles ( under 1 micron in size) that could be harmful to humans. Previously, a simple fiberglass or cotton based air filter or furnace filter were the norm. Simple to use, inexpensive and easy to find.

Pure Air Systems has been in business now for over 27 years selling HEPA based air filtration systems to the residential, commercial, institutional, medical and industrial markets. The adaption of this technology by the HVAC industry took many years. The ability to understand the rationale of using a fan powered, HEPA based unit in conjunction with an HVAC system seemed counter intuitive. Yet, today, the coupling of these two systems has become somewhat common place and has proven to be the most effective air filtration protocol for the residential market today.

The commercial and medical markets have always been fans of HEPA systems and in most cases could not operate without them. The need to understand technology and its benefits and features before you pass judgement on it because it looks different than what you are used to is a serious error. The past is the past. Remember the good times but adapt to the future. Resistance, as Darth Vader would say, is futile.

TOMBSTONE….”I told you I was sick”

Walking through an old grave yard the other day I noticed some unusual scripting on some of the tombstones. The typical “born date” “died date” were present on all of them but a few had more creative wording on the granite markers. One of the most popular epitaphs that has been written in dozens of languages world wide is…”I Told You I Was Sick.” I found this on two head stones. I’m sure the deceased relatives didn’t think it was funny, but somehow I think this comment says it all.

People complain about everything today. And with the help of social media they can do it 24/7  and have the world be their sounding board. For many people, complaining about their health or how certain issues affect their health has become their favorite hobby. However, in many instances these “cry wolf”  health concerns are actually valid complaints. Negative reactions to various foods, environmental conditions and industrial pollutants, both liquid and air, are more common than ever.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing commercial grade, certified HEPA and Carbon based fan powered air filtration devices since 1985. Our experience in working with individuals, environmental specialists, Allergists, Physicians and Industrial Hygienists has provided us with a wealth of  practical application knowledge regarding the overall effectiveness of our HEPA filtration systems.

Individuals who either are pre-disposed to a specific type of allergen or pathogen or those who have weakened immune systems due to  constant contact with airborne contaminants (both particulate and gaseous) and who have used one of the Pure Air Systems HEPA units in their living and/or work environment, have achieved excellent results with the systems. In almost every case where an individual was experiencing some physical or respiratory distress from their polluted environment, the introduction of the PAS HEPA systems provided a minimum of 70% relief with the majority of individuals having virtually no symptoms at all.

While these results are not derived from a scientific, long-term study, the fact that people have continued to purchase the PAS products for over 27 years has proven the market recognizes the ability for the systems to excel and provide the performance as promised by Pure Air Systems.

For years individuals have complained about certain health issues that they believe are directly related to their living or work environment. Often these health issues are discarded by the medical profession as emotional or psychosomatic. While there are some instances where this is true, for the most part the symptoms and the suffering is real. Recently the medical profession has determined that the underlying cause for many of the “environmental illness” issues are now related to fibromyalgia…which can be treated to a certain extent with medication.  However, contact with our customers who have been diagnosed with this disease have found that it is the “easy out” diagnosis for everything environmental.

The fact is that those people who suffer from constant contact with any type of allergen, gaseous pollutant or pathogens continue to find more relief when living and working in a cleaner environment. Especially when they use one of the PAS HEPA systems. For individuals who do have an issue with the air they breathe contacting us now is better than having to write something too soon like, “I told you I was sick,” as your epitaph.

Hell Opened Up And Put On Sale

Competition can be brutal. Being successful in business requires you to be part mystic, part Samurai warrior, part Bill Gates and sometimes…just plain lucky. The internet, social media, smart phone, tablets, viral marketing, YouTube are now tools that are used by most companies to market their products and services. Sure, the old stand-by’s like the newspaper, TV, radio and mailers are still used but their effectiveness is much harder to measure since you now have analytic’s and metric’s for social media to measure exactly who is getting your information and how they are using it. With ads, TV, radio and mailers it is difficult to know if you are actually reaching your target market.

This ability to utilize social media in has been a real boon to the small, entrepreneurial start-up companies…and this has not gone unnoticed by the big boys. With little or no up front costs, a small company with only a handful of employees can have a presence on the internet that looks as big as a Fortune 500 corporation. And, with the new metrics, analytics and inbound and outbound content processes, these small speedsters can bring a product or service to market, get in infused and become a household name in under six months in some cases.

With that said, there is still the old adage that says, “in the end all that really counts is performance.” You can tout your capabilities and  have a very professional online presence that captures the imagination of your target market. However, if, in the end, you don’t live up to your stated promises, your company will die a very slow and painful death. While the social media crowd can support and push your company and its products and/or services to people around the world in a short period of time. They can also destroy you just as quickly.

Since kids are computer, iPhone, smart phone, tablet, social media savvy before they are 10, their ability to create a company, blog site, website, webinar, or podcast is now a reality. This means companies will be competing with younger and younger entrepreneurs who will be on a par, if not slightly better, then their counter parts in the corporate world. One should seriously take note of this issue.

Pure Air Systems, has been manufacturing high end, commercial grade, certified HEPA air filtration systems since 1985. It has had a presence on the internet since 1994 and has not looked back since. There is no doubt that the ability to promote your product on the web has been a boon to many companies and in many cases is the only way people can find out about their products or services.

PAS has been a performance based company since its inception and today is recognized as one of the leaders in high performance HEPA air filtration. It continues to develop and promote products to meet the needs of an every changing market. The use of their website and social media like Facebook, Twitter and blogging, has truly enhanced their marketing programs and there is no doubt that the sales to international customers has been due in part to social media. But, in the end, the performance of the systems is still tantamount to the success of the company.

Using Positive Pressure With Air Filtration

The word pressure connotes a number of concepts. There is pressure to get things done on time, pressure cooking for vegetables and pressure to form a mold with an hydraulic machine. Pressure can be both negative and positive. The use of pressure as it relates to filtration is usually only associated with the medical or chip markets but has more recently been incorporated into the residential markets.

In the medical markets the use of HEPA filtered air for both general IAQ and for surgery suites and isolation rooms is standard. All hospital surgery rooms are pressurized using 100% HEPA filtered air so that if anyone enters the room during a procedure the air will push out through the door or opening not allowing any unfiltered or contaminated air to enter the room.

In the electronics, chip and optics manufacturing processes the same procedure is used. HEPA filtered air is pushed into the assembly and manufacturing rooms at high rates; often changing all the air in the room 100 times per hour. Again, the pressurization of the room eliminates any dust, dirt or airborne particulates from entering the sterile assembly environment even when the room is accessed from the outside.

Pure Air Systems has been manufacturing HEPA and Carbon based high end, commercial grade HEPA filtration systems since 1985. Their fan powered systems are designed to either attach to an existing HVAC system or they can be used as stand-alone units. Over the past 27 years of operation the customer base for PAS has moved away from Residential only to a 60/40 split between the commercial and residential markets. With commercial being the larger growth sector.

Pure Air Systems has numerous HEPA systems in the medical and electronics markets. Some or used for general air filtration but the majority are used for critical care or critical component processes. And almost all of these are used in positive pressure operations. The ability to incorporate the same positive pressure techniques used in the commercial markets into the residential and office markets has been an interesting project.

The introduction of outside, fresh filtered air into a residential or office structure is accomplished by adding one of the PAS HEPA based systems to the HVAC unit and introducing small amounts of outside air through the the HEPA/Carbon/Prefilter filtration package and slightly pressurize the living environment. This significantly reduces the entry of airborne allergens and pathogens into the living space and also reduces the levels of CO2 in the homes and offices.

The use of positive pressure for reduction of airborne contaminants is very effective and in most cases fairly inexpensive to accomplish.
